Again diving into the weirder parts of the internet, I stumbled across this...

Apparently Soviet Infrared goggles from the early 40's, I can't find additional information to confirm wether or not this image is bullshit :-X

http://vrtifacts.com/night-vision-goggles-of-red-army/

The original source of this information is at the bottom of the page, but the images have expired. The only source the 'source' gives is "Military Literature", which is vague as fuck ;D

Super necromancer resurrection of this thread but, I have an old book at home with pictures. One shows a marine with almost identical infrared googled with the description that they were used on Okinawa in 1945. So, it might not be to impossible that the soviet had something as well? ;P I gonna find a picture of it!

That's weird XD... but thanks for the contribution. I guess they didn't want to lose the tech race against the Germans.

I wonder how useful were these weapons to them, perhaps it made no difference :-\.

NP, who knows. According to the text underneath the picture it says those googles played a considerable role on Okinawa.

I never even knew this before, but apparently the IS-2 has a hull machine gun. It was not in a ball mount, and was in a fixed position. On early hull models the barrel stuck out from the hull slightly and could be seen if you looked close. On models with the newer hull design the barrel was not visible, but if you looked closely you could see a little hole in the left side of the hull where the gun fired through. You can see the hole clearly in this picture if you zoom in.

As far as i know the hull MG was added when the IS-2 were modernised into the IS-2M cold war standard.

The machinegun placement on the hull of the IS-2 never made much sense to me. It would have had only been periodically manned by the loader, and if the XRay mode in WT is right, it would have had the powder charges for the shells blocking access most of the time. So yeah, not the most comfortable gun position ever, but I suppose Soviet tanks weren't exactly 5 star hotels :P

They had more projects where they tried to put heavy weapons on outdated tanks.
E.g. the Vozilo A:

or the M-320 tank:

or this T-54 with Hellcat turret for training:
