Title: Guard Infantry
Post by: Celution on November 10, 2009, 07:04:13 PM
I am concered about the Guard Infantry being a littlebit OP because they are unsupressable.

Basicly what you would do is running 1 or 2 guard squads to kill an MG42 team, so your other infantry can walk happy further, without getting supressed. You can keep doing this everytime you see an MG42 team.

How on earth can you counter the early-mid blobs? (I assume you can get guards quite fast; something like Assault Grenadiers and Tankbusters).

My sugestion is giving the Guards little to no supression like vet 3 KCH's.

Yea, I was thinking same. Give 'em high suppression ratings.
But completely immune?... They'd have to be terminators.
Sigh. Well, as always, don't have beta. Wait and see, I
guess. But I do share your worries on this.

You assume wrong - it is very difficult to get Guards fast. You get them around the same time that the Wehrmacht gets Knights' Cross Holders (which can rip Guards to shreds).

Besides, Guard will still get badly hurt by running headlong into MG fire, regardless of supression.

Oh, hey, that's good news :)
I was afraid of seeing soviet squads running about,
 blissfully immune to HMG/mortar/flamethrowers, hitting
Teller mines (from a passing vehicle) and taking no damage.
Getting a direct hit from a V1 and getting no damage and...

... ok. They're human after all :) Good news.
 Reassuring, really :)

I saw one guardian in the Map-video with the mosin nagant rifle. Will they start with them and you have to equip them with svt-40s?
 ???

No, Guards start with SVT-40's and that's the way it stays. What you probably saw was the soldiers that accompany the Major, who look similar and do have Mosins.

 Guards are experimented/decorated svelky.
Sigh, I feel svelky ought to be able to throw grenades, though.

Svelky ought to be able to throw grenades : Yup :)
Or, cmon. They'll soon become useless. No vet, no grenades...

Sure, PTRD are nice, but normal soldiers need something against
tanks. Soviets can't pick up bazookas/shreks. In Men of War,
anyone can wield s, and sure does, too! Make it an upgrade if
need to. Panzerfausts, Sticky Bombs, PE AT Grenades... cmon! :D

Make them make barbed wire/bags at least?

Voop_Bakon : Learned how to post. Keep it up. Arg! Lol
 It's the e-cookies doing it! ;)

Recrewing is the issue... Weapon pick-ups work as normal.

What, you mean like Knight's Cross Holders? In too many games I've thrown multiple squads, weapons teams AND armor at KCHs all to have it bounce off and maybe take 1 of the 3 man terminator squads. I've litterally seen Knights chew up 3-4 up-armed and vetted squads like they were nothing.

Cheapest unit in the game, IMHO.

And so where does that leave Guards? Like a slightly up-armoured Rangers squad sans anti-armor ability?

Oh? Weapon pick up works?? Hmm, that is amazing news :D

 - Still need grenades on Svelky though. conscripts get
Molotov, and Guards get krak and AI grenades... cmon :p
 * What point will there be getting guards if KHC can rip them
to shreds, though? No point adding units if they're obsolete
 in-game IMHO.

The veterancy thing bugs me somewhat... too.
 How can Svelky remain viable?

So, by your logic it's pointless having the T-34 because it can be bested by a Panther? KCH don't tear up the Guards from what i've tested and there certainly hasn't been any complaints to say otherwise.

Stelky can be upgraded to have Ppshs, DP-28s and another special something (I won't say what) making them awesome close-combat troops. If that doesn't make them viable in your eyes, tough shizzles.

I hate you so much. The one bit of info we get, and its only described as "a special something"  :'(

Update soon...ish..... maybe??

 - Warty said that both 6 pop weight elite infantry would
come out at same time and that Guards got ripped to
 shreds :) He's a dev :) So I must believe him :)
 - As for the T34 vs Panther, again, it's a tech/pop weight
issue. The Panther is 12 pop, and it's optimized vs tank
combat, thus weak vs Infantry. The T34 is more like a
sherman or Pz4. All purpose. 8 pop weight. The /85
upgrade makes it into a Sherman76, kinda. But here the
 difference seems to end.

Sherman can get vet. Improving it considerably vs
Panther (although it will still lose in 1 on 1, but it *IS*
 8 pop vs 12 pop).

I'm saying like it's useless to throw tons of jeeps at
 a panther, yknow? :)

Y'know... this just ain't right. Them are the soviets damn it.
How about you guys add a 2xT34(Whatever+2 guard call in
or something? Once all the buildings are in place. Perhaps
needs an upgrade. Some like the 2x Panther call-in from the
 PEs.

Also, I saw nothing about improved economics, or resiliency.
Soviets could take massive losses and jump right back in.

PE has it (all doctrines), USA has it (infantry). Most have
 a super-unit (tank) call-in. Why not a T34 call-in? One
(or two) is nice. Even better. Make it a 1 unit call-in earlier
on, and change it to 2x later as an extra upgrade. That'd
help make the soviet tank fleet bigger faster.

(Soviets don't have a build tank fast upgrade either) :p

 Thoughts, anyone?

Not a terrible idea Loup, but we're getting a little off topic. Throw your tank/econ bonus idea into the "Suggestions" ring, although I question at this stage if it'll have much traction.

Back to the point at hand...

Burro I love the sound of Strelky as it looks like they'll be a pretty gritty unit. As for the Guards though, is my guess accurate? A toughened up Rangers squad with no anti-armor but better close-combat?
Title: Re: Guard Infantry

 Well I did say 2x T34 + guards... so... technically... ;)
 As for close-in... no. SVT40's are like PE's GE43. They're
 long-ranged quasi snipers.

 - And I did put it in suggestions, already.
I think it fits soviets well enough for them to have it.
Not only others ought to have thing like that :p
