AS well, after I played CoH:EF, I spoted that LOTS of this mod "spirit" is taken from a film "Enemy at the Gates".
The TRUELY Reveiw on this film You may found here:
http://www.battlefield.ru/en/hall-of-shame/206-enemy-at-the-gates.html (http://www.battlefield.ru/en/hall-of-shame/206-enemy-at-the-gates.html)
P.S. All former "USSR-ians" are TOTALLY AGREE with review.
PLS show read reveiw and show Your opinion...
Best wishes!

Yet again, a cheesy mainstream war film is not some sort of attack on the Soviet people, and no, not everybody in the west thinks thats what actually happened and yes none of us really understand do we :P
But yeah the reviewer is right to an extent, it is a pretty awful film...
-
I watched this film when i was a child and i thought it was a pretty good film, i had no bias against or for the USSR and i just took it for what it was - a war film.
I watched it when i was much older, and understood the conflict and the politics of the time and realized it was still just a film.
Trust me on this, nobody in the United States believes that any Hollywood film is accurate. Its entertainment, its fun, its not a damn history lesson.
Edit: I'v read the review and the reviewer seems to be under the misconception that this movie was a history lesson, and that the west believes that this is true, and that he has to defend himself, his country, and verbally attack the west every chance he gets in order to justify the actions.
It was not so much a review of the movie but a review on how the movie was historically inaccurate (even though the movie itself was pretty piss-poor)
Edit 2: I thought over what the reviewer had said, though, and realized he did have a fair ammount of good points that could have added to the narrative and the over all atmosphere of the suffereing and sacrifice of the Soviet soldiers, then again the directors name seems very french, which would explain a lot. :P

I would like to see a Russian film about the Western Front ;D
This reviewer seems to think that 'film' is synonymous with 'documentary', and I am sure that the reviewer would jump off a bridge if he saw this film: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286306/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286306/)

Instead of americans, we respect our Allyes (USA, France, UK and others), and dont need to insuilt them in films, like americans do.
"EatG" is full of stupid ColdWar stamps, and all of them are in your mind guys, even if You didnt saw that film. You all grows with that stamps from Your childhood time.
Now, what we see? You make Soviet soldiers for Your game, but they are YOU THINK THEY WERE, not as THEY WERE IN REAL.
You want examples?
Try to find differences in this TOTALLY INCORRECT UNIFORM.

This uniform is full of mistakes, as it wear winter cloth (shinelle) together with summer hat (furazhka). Also, he raise up his collar of cloth - that was forbidden and impossible style of wearing of uniform!!!

Documentary film show a real story of real people, without fictions. A historical feature film show a fictitious story in scenery of real history. There is a wrong scenery.

Artillerist please dont try and tell us whats "in our minds".
Saying that our impression of Russia is still influenced by some sort of Cold War propaganda is a more than a little patronising :)
Notice how nobody is telling you your understanding of the USA is wrong because of Soviet propaganda hmm?
Cheers

Agree mate, but when we do something (film, a videogame) about americans/western people - we consuilt with americans/western people, and dont do coldwar minded "our veiw" :)
-
A lot of the people here were born after the fall of the Soviet Union, i'v not heard of any 'Propoganda' of which you speak.
Films are entertainment, most of them are innacurate, dont worry though, your average 'Westerner' knows this.

The main problem is not realism, but a style. In the game the Americans are presented as self-confident, but cool, the British - as professional soldiers, gentlemen-knights, the Germans - as also as professionals, badasses, and the Russians are always presented as evil weak meat.

...which game is this?
I'm fairly sure that if you try hard enough to be insulted by something then you will be, lighten up abit, nation states are a bad idea anyway :P
Personally I like to see it as Americans - gung ho and stupid, British -ugly and stuck up, Germans - sinister and humourless, Russians - drunk and angry. ;D
Cheers

I talked about our mod. After all, everyone compare this film and the game.

What forces is this officer?
Red Army 1941-43 or Soviet Army 43-45?
If we have Soviet army, and all other soldiers are with epaulets (mean them Soviet soldiers 43-45), so officer must have epaulets too... But he wear 41-42 uniform!
This Officer is almost 100% copy of what we saw in film.
Is it possible to repaint his skin? Just a little...

Almost all in game with Command Officer is Ok, but collar must be reworked - as in this picture. Also, epaulets must be added.

For the better or the worse, Enemy at the Gates is THE Stalingrad movie, much like Saving Private Ryan is THE D-Day movie. Both are historically inacurrate (tho definitely EATG takes the cake) but very entertaining WWII films, with epic war scenes; don't take them too seriously. But yeah reading the russian reviews gives a very different perspective.
Personally I like a lot the approach the EF devs took, I always pictured the Soviet faction like that, with masses of heroic but poorly-equipped conscripts, katyushas, sniper aces, tank riders, glorious Soviet tanks, fearless flag bearers...
Also, it's the same epic approach seen in the Call of Duty games, which makes it even better.

I think EatG is a classic hollywood war movie. no one knows nothing about the historical background, but lets do it and add some great explosions and nazi stuff ;D
THE stalingrad movie for me is "STALINGRAD" by Joseph Vilsmaier. It´s a realistic movie from the point of view of some German Landser and there´s no heroism, just dirt, blood, pain - as it was! If you don´t know this movie i recommend you to watch it and avoid the hollywood-war-crap!

The collar is the way it is as it was taken from the game - NOT a custom infantry model (which would have had to be re-animated).
-
EatG it's just a Hollywood film. :)
Why are there allways people who can't guess the difference between a film and a documentary? It's the same for SPR.
Great movies but nothing to do with reality. It's cinema after all, it's meant to entertain people and not to teach them history-lessons. ;)
On the other hand, there great films, like mentioned "Stalingrad" or that finnish film about "Talvisota", I think that's also how it's named.
-
Dragon93:
Yep, I understand, let it bu with collar up (weird but... let him be "mad Major").
But pls add him epoulettes and remove red ranks from collar pls, so he would be 43-45 oppicers uniform (as all other SA soldiers in game).

Better watch this:
"Hot snow", film 1972.
The Hot Snow (English subtitles). Part 1/10. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5GkxcWVhhg#normal)
First combat of soviet artillery against massive actions of Tiger, december 1942, Stalingrad, Mansteinn deblocking attack.
-
The Hot Snow is a really good film.
Soviet films may not have a good battle scenes and the "action", but are perfect for movies on the game engine in the campaign (between battles).

The Carentan campaign level opening cinematic was based completely off Band of Brothers, wih them going through a swamp at dawn then moving into Carentan to be ambushed by a German MG in a cafe at 1:20, I mean, even the Call of Duty MP maps from the the 1st and 2nd game bears a resemblance to the "Cafe Normandie" scene.
CoH
Company of Heroes Carentan Cinematic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHWl09cKAQI#normal)
In the movie:
Band of Brothers - Carentan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIgFNR7ZOhU#normal)
And I'm sure the first campaign level at Omaha Beach has referances to Saving Private Ryan.
So even the original game pays Homage to movies, and I don't think the EF Devs could've helped themselves from putting an Enemy at the Gates referance in.
-
The movie was based on WWII.
The game is based on WWII.
OMG, what a coincidence! : )
Seriously though you are right about the Saving Private Ryan thing - but the Captain from CoH is based on Captain Miller (Tom Hanks) in Saving Private Ryan, they both lead companys into the beach, his speech on the boat was the same as Miller's, and they both get killed by a Tank (actualy, Miller dies from a gunshot to the chest, probably internal bleeding, but he died facing a tank..).
Wouldn't know about Band of Brothers I havn't seen it but I think maybe I should rent it tonight... : D
The Captain's are based on each other - not the missions.. But your right nonetheless..

Most of that stuff is based off the first two CoD 1 levels. Ah good memories, I was like "wtf! He didn't give me a rifle!" when I first played it.

Its a fucking shame that no one has thought about making a movie depicting both Vasily Zaytsev and the Wehrmacht sniper in anti-hollywood style.
Don't get me wrong I thought the movie was pretty good but could had been way better if they had actually put more time into character development and maybe better depiction of the battle.
Of course that would mean that you may have to switch between western and eastern front on the movie which would be tricky. :P
