No, most Germans are not good at English, they don't even teach it in school and everything on tv is dubbed.

Here's a small example:

And another one

Depends, I know a few Germans who speak English well (well atnest not totally broken), although they don't understand some words (like boring) which I need to explain to them the meaning, but I admire how they try and speak it, they aren't fond of it.
Where can I get vCoH German voice mod anyway?

You can change the language in vcoh but that changes the other voices and everything else to German too so i wouldn't recommend it.

But you can however use German speech files with the campaigns. http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=222557 (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=222557)

That is not true, if you do it right you take some German speaking files and use it for the axis files it works perfectly, it still allows everyone else to speak whatever they need to speak, all the info is here along with all the language files needed http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=120920&page=1&pp=15 (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=120920&page=1&pp=15)

I bet the developers just used the Russian sound file for the Soviets, so they can use the German sound file for the Ostheer, then they'll completely speak German. ;)

Lol, the first one is a commercial. Kids in Germany do learn English and French if they want to. But I must admit: There are a lot of Germans who can speak English very well .. and there are a lot of who can't. I've been learning English since I was 11 and even extended my knowledge with a Cambridge English course, though I don't know the meaning of all words. Some I have to look up, too.

I'd like the Ostheer to speak German, too. I think that many people, who don't speak or understand German, would love that, too.

Oh and to the part with "mein Herr". We actually don't say sir, but we say the rank of the officer.
Like:
You say: Yes, sir.
We say: Yes, Herr Feldwebel.

That "if they want to" was actually for the French part. Sorry for the confusion :)

Same in the British Army. Well, kind of. NCOs are always referred to by their rank, but COs can be either called their rank or simply 'Sir', depending on the manner.

I would like the Ostheer to speak German. It's sad that in the German version of the Game the Americans and the British speak German. Some games let the player choose a language, yet, unfortunately, CoH does not belong to these games.

Be that as it may, what is true is that there are many people in Germany who do not speak English well. As concerns me, I love English, and although I had English lessons from fifth to thirteenth grade, most of what I have learned I have learned by myself. My English is not perfect, needless to say, but I keep trying to improve.

I hate the procedure in Germany that both all films and series are dubbed, even though the number of those who would like to listen to the original English speakers keeps growing. With respect to films and series on DVDs, I always switch to English if English is the original language.

Think of all older people than 30, they didn't learn English much, so they will look movies on German, otherwhise they can't understand 'em. And if there're people, who want to watch the movies in English, they change the audio to English and turn on German subtitles, if wished. (Like me.)
I'm 18 and I learned English since the 5th class.

Many (maybe nearly all) people in my age are able to speak basic English to communicate.

I honestly think the goal in mind should be making the Ostheer (and Soviets) speak accented English as the vanilla factions do. Given the vast amount of sound files needed, this may or may not be a goal that can be accomplished, but if there is an effort to create custom unit speech files, it should attempt to mirror the vanilla factions.

If only so I know when I'm getting artied.

Sad part is, is many German's speak English better then many American's...that ghetto talk is rather annoying when you walk up and someone asks you for something and you have no idea what it is... even though they are speaking 'English.'

All german factions must speak just their language...not english with another accent.This is so annoying...

Listening russians speaking their language in game is so sweet.I don't understand what they say,but with time i will learn many words...and that for sure.

Also all who say about people over 30 years to be unable to learn new language...are bad informed i say...to be kind speaking...i don't want to insult them.

My mother learned another language at 50 years,and i,also learned english,and i will continue to learn all is need all my life.

Many people from this world know just their language,and this is a sad thing...and many times insult people who speak their language,but make mistakes.Anyone who try to suppose,is very probably to make mistakes...because cannot be compared situations when one person made that...or know exactly that...and another "think" about that(suppose)

Yes.I am one hundred percent agree with that

Messages to be written in english,and voices for soldiers to be their real language.

UK =>speak english
US=>speak american
USSR =>speak russian
Germany =>speak german

Can be found mods who make germans to speak their language.Developers are interested in that ?

I was actually a bit disappointed by the lack of an English dub. I found the Germans able to speak English in vanilla CoH to be one of the most endearing things about the game, as it shows how witty the writers at Relic are (who can forget "Time for us to un-pimp zer ride!"). It's not like complete realism is why I play this game (I play Red Orchestra for that).

While I have been following this Eastern Front Mod for a short while now and have played it a number of times, the reason I have registered here today is because I can't stand some of ridiculous claims being made in this thread here.

I do not wish to offend anyone, but let's be fair and honest for a moment in our bashing of America (I am Canadian born).

As an amateur linguist who is a student of German, I am appalled when I read posts wherein Germans claim to speak a better form of English than Native English speakers, as if it is because Americans are all slang using imbeciles.

Yes, there is some truth to it that in the sterile language classes we are often taught the 'educated' forms of language, and as a result, those non-native speakers of English might have a better understanding of the complex grammar than the native speakers themselves. However, this applies to all peoples, not just Americans.

When you walk out onto the street in Germany, do you truly believe that everyone is speaking a proper 'educated' form of German? To believe so is to be living in a delusion, my friend. Germans use slang all the time, and many of them do not understand the complex grammar of their own language, just like how English speakers do not of their own.

By using your own arguments, I could claim that I speak German better than you do, since I study it as a foreign language. However, the reality is that this is laughable, since of course I don't speak German better than you.

Furthermore, concerning British English vs American English and Austrian German vs High German: British and American English are nearly identical, with only very minor spelling, grammar and pronunciation differences. Whereas Austrian German and High German could arguably be considered different languages altogether, since I can't understand a word of Austrian German, despite having studied High German for years.

And no offense to any Brits either, but in many ways American English is actually more true and faithful to older forms of English than the English of London, England, implying more change has taken place over in the British isles than over here in the Americas.

Whenever I listen to British English, I am amazed by its beauty at times, and then a moment later am amazed by how much the slang of the layman has simplified your form of English.

For example: instead of using the original present perfect forms of the verbs 'to get' and 'to prove', like we do in North America, you guys in Britain have gotten used to using the simple past form.

"I have gotten" - "American"/original English
"I have got" - Modern British English

"I have proven" - "American"/original English
"I have proved" - Modern British English

So, at the end of the day, I must inquire, how is the English spoken here in North America a dirty and unintelligible slang when it in fact is more faithful to older forms of English than the one spoken in London, England?

I did not mean to offend anyone, and am sorry for going so off topic, but I want those who enjoy going on America-bashing crusades to think about this topic for a moment, and realise that in no country do people in informal speech speak properly. Thank you.

Most of the people here who are saying "most Germans can speak English", aren't even German.

And those of you who are, you damn well know most Germans can't speak English worth crap...and those that can have that thick, heavy German accent where you can't even understand what they're saying.

The entire purpose of the guy earlier who posted the video links, was to show they are promoting the learning of English in Germany and for a REASON.

I was in Munich and Frankfurt recently and even the people at the airport could only speak the bare basics of English.

I'm sure some people didn't have the same experience as me, but I stayed in Bavaria and Franconia for a few weeks in the summer. Everybody I met spoke fantastic English (some even sounded UK/US native, save for the German mannerisms), except one child who had to ask their older sister what we were saying. I did speak German, but most of the time, people must have recognised my British accent and instead decided it would be easier for both of us to speak English.

Magyar, iverieli, and anyone else that is stupid enough to think that this thread is a political/nationalist debate, YOU ARE WRONG. Stop with that crap, I posted this thread as a suggestion to the Modders. I like how the Russians speak thier language, and I just wanted to know if they can make the Germans speak German. This is not a place for your stupid little antics about other countries. Next post regarding something OTHER than the mod, will be banned from my thread. Ive had enough. Talk about the topic or STFU.
