Title: English voice overs?
Post by: Kartoffel on March 23, 2010, 04:36:34 PM
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the actual Russian being used, but given that I only "yes" and "no" in Russian, would it be possible to have a voice over with a Russian accent telling you when you're under attack, or when a squad is killed? As of right now, I have no idea what they're saying other than "SNIPER!"

I know it would be a lot of work, and if there's a subtitle option somewhere, I must have missed it...

Well considering the Russians have American speech in Russian..(Hear the T-70 say 'Greyhount')I like it as is.
I don;t like the Speech from the US facton I don't want the only Allied Faction I play to go back down that path, Its just a step backwards.

Thank you! This has been bugging me for some time now. I would love to hear English with a Russian accent. There is so much possibility. Imagine the conscripts pouring in screaming bloody murder all the way. Dissing the Germans and so forth.

Find some voice actors... I'm sure they would implement it to some extent if they had willing voice talent.

The number of individual voice clips we would need to record and implement for each faction number in the tens of thousands. That alone is a HUGE task, but we would also need multiple professional-sounding voice actors, scriptwriters, and expensive equipment and vast expanses of time that none of us have.

Lol the simpliest solution boys in this case is to learn Russian language. Это не так трудно научиться русский язык.

Btw is it possible to implement subtitles at least to help these boys to understand Soviets?

If I'm not mistaken, the speech is the same as the US, so whats the point, the easiest way is to pay attention to what is going on and learn voice patterns.

Agreed, I'm practically fluent and I had never heard Russian before.

so let me get this straight. The soviets are using the same structure as the allies? so by memorizing them, I could understand thre soviets?

I believe so. Now do you see why english voice overs would be completely  boring?
Title: Re: English voice overs?
Post by: TacticalNuke on May 31, 2010, 07:50:27 PM
Yeah you have a good point. Still it would be cool to hear some Russians dissing the Germans... But thanks, that was helpful!

plus who wants to hear the same thing over and over it gets annoying at least with the Russians you dont know it so it sound new every time they say something reducing the annoying factor

yeah it seems not doable at the time with the voice acting. but maybe you could hook up with some voice actors somewhere? its been done in other mods im sure of that.

I think the Devs should really look into getting voice acting done only for like 50-100 of the most vital lines and make an alternate voice file.

Would it really be hard to find one guy to do the announcer voices which there are only a few? I'm fine with my troops speaking Russian unless they're crying that they're under attack.

Aren't there side messages on the screen? Be aware of whats going on is all you need to do , there are several viable solutions that have been presented and an announcer is one that is considered invalid.

I don't know the proper term, but I mean the mysterious voice that says things like "We've lost a unit." or "The enemy is taking territory."

I can speak English with a heavy Russian accent and my dad can too and he has one of those really heavy accents.

omg why should everyone hear English? You dont understand ? Learn ! If you are lazy, its your problem. Neither English or Russian is my native language but I understand them. I love ignorants degenerating games to Engrish only...because thats the only language they understand.
If you could listen, for example ISU speaks "Firefly go(a)tov", firefly ready, I think IS-2 says- em dvacaťšesť - m 26...of Pershing. But it is still better than listening to some english with some accent. Because dont get me wrong, you wont get it done really professionally. Better get some Russians speak their language not Greykhound...etc. But of course it seems there is rather short supply of Russians willing to do it.(and having equipment needed)
So for me its good the way it it. Could be better, but its still fine.

I agree, we need new voices... but in russian. US... are US, they use english :P germans have their voices (english with english accent which suck), so russians should speak in russian not english with sucky english accent. 1/3 of present voices are good (they don't contain unit names or so), but many units (MOSTLY TANKS) shout like they're US/Brit units...

Russian is a difficult language for native Englis speakers to learn, and I'm sure not learning Russian for a game mod. Besides, I don't have time.

I tried learning german and I failed, Badly. I can say I tried.

the funny thing is you have a very high standard of gaming, where everything is translated to English. You may wonder how non-English speakers play games when they dont have a clue what is what and what to do... It is not difficult really, it doesnt mean you will have to understand what they say, it means you will at least learn which sound means what, even if you dont have the hearing used to Russian. And actually Russian language is far more useful than youd believe...

So in my opinion there is nothing wrong with units what they actually say and you should either get used to not understanding, or get used to learning something out of the English box. At school I was taught like 9 years German language, no English, no Russian. Wasnt interested, because I didnt choose it. (poor teachers etc.) But not that I dont know anything...

I am not going to argue or be agressive. I simply believe native languages should be used, be it Russian, English, or German. I know old factions have that mixed language for westerners to understand, but imo they still suck

Well I agree with TomaSkTemplar , He has a good point that I hope everyone finally gets, to have English Voice overs on top of Toma's reasons is just undoing everything the Devs worked for in translating the speech.

Since hiring voice actors is out of the question and we want the devs to work on the mod, why don't we give the task to the community. I would be willing to make some voice recordings and while I am not a qualified expert, I say something is better than nothing.

If I find spare time, I would think it to be fun to try and make a couple of voice files. Who knows, maybe their mediocrity will not be much of a factor as long as I just simply understand where I'm being attacked. Plus I have a bit of a Slavic accent so I may legitimately look into this

You should ask the devs what sound files are needed so you can phrase them.

Two days ago I was using Voss's Tiger to blow up Soviet tanks, but he would say things like "Targeting Churchill." when I really wanted to hit a KV-1. He would also call conscripts British infantry and et cetera.

Just a random encounter, it doesn't bother me much. But since Voss's crew supposedly served on the Eastern Front, shouldn't they know about Soviet armor and infantry? ???

Anyway, to put us back on subject, I decided to give it a go and make some very simple voice commands. I cannot mod the actual game and this is not a working mod of the game but just some voice overs. Here is what I made in 30 minutes using my voice and writing.

CoH Eastern Front Voice Promo.wmv (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DfgYcDajw4#lq-lq2-hq-vhq)

I'm here to ask the community if I should contact the devs and actually pursue this or if I'm wasting my time.

Be as harsh as you want, I like constructive criticism.

It sounds pretty good ;D, but I just always imagined a high-pitched voice could do the job.

Sounds good , a little loud , but may be because of my Volume :D I think you should contact the devs about it.

cant you speak Russian instead ? Palkovnik Pjotr?

Naši bezstrašni (or correct equivalent of fearless) saldaty prigatovleny k baju s fašistami :-) in a strong, confident, however not commanding voice, as it is the player who is the chief :-)
When using GoW, say something like... Artileristy, Stalin dal prikaz :-) (in a commanding voice ofc) (you should know that march) would be helluva fun.

Well these are "English Voice Overs" designed to allow players who speak English to know whats going on with their troops. I would like to do the same in Russian, but alas, I am from Serbia and not Russia and therefore speak no Russian.

Great suggestion, but I would need a Russian speaker to do that.
