Title: The Gebirsjagers?
Post by: HyperSniper999 on May 29, 2010, 04:26:27 AM
I'm wondering what was it like being a Gebirsjager during WW2. How did they train? What were the requirements for entry into the Gebirsjager? What battles/operations did they participate in?

Thanks for any info.

Gebirgsjäger are "mountain troops". They were trained to fight at difficult terrain ( special focus; mountains ^^ ) with special "light" equipment and weapons.
To become a Gebirgsjäger you have to be in good condition to
be able for mountain climbing and transporting and fighting after "climbing".
During the war the Gebirgsjäger were a elite unit of the Wehrmacht. They fought during all campaigns. Think one of the most "famous" story about the german Gebirgsjäger was the storm and capturing of the mount Elbrus at the Caucasus.
But often Gebirgsjäger had to fight like normal infantry because there were no reserves or commanders had no idea how to use this troops.

The Gebirgsnägers(gnihihihi) fought mainly in Norway, Caucasus and in the Arctic. I know a story of a granduncle who was gebirgsjäger in caucasus and he said that it was often like which side is first at the mountain and the side which is second is doomed to get shot together from above.
