Title: Guards Firepower
Post by: AbhMkh on July 26, 2010, 07:42:40 PM
I was wondering that guards horribly lack the firepower, which they should possess being the "Russian elite infantry"

They cant compete well against anything  , they have a large variety of grenades but lack the suitable guns , the svt 40 is rather a very poor weapon , in fact the strelky are more useful as they possess more firepower than the guards(with their ppsh or dp28 upgrades) and combined with the command squad they can demolish any sort of infantry

In my opinion Guards are a total waste of manpower , whts urs????

They have +50% more HP compared to Strelky.
Their nades are pretty usefull too at killing infantry or scaring of tanks.
While Strelky work well vs infantry Guards are a do it all unit. Their much better than PE G43 grens.

1.20 Spoiler. As a translator I know that 1.20 Guards will be suppressable unless they reach vet 1.

well, IMO Guard should get some extra upgrades, like strelky. Let's say give 4 men PPsh on vet X.

Same here man , the guards should at least have the ppsh with them , the grenades have a long cool down time and aren't that useful...

Its like comparing the Bren tommies and commandos

the latter is the British elite infantry but lack firepower even against light vehicles

I hope the 1.20 keeps this in mind , btw :- paciat are the russians going to earn veterancy in 1.20 or wht??

As far as I know they now vet with an american-like-system; except for the last vet of the command squad, which resembles PE. You did well not listening those interviews on Announcements section with Bluecast ;D... they just do more bad than good 8)... in the sense that I eagerly want to play 1.20 since that day... well at least they didn't release it today :D!!! I'm tired. First time in a while that I'm going to sleep before 10pm :-\.

Strelky get PPSh, Sturmovie get PPSh, Tank riders get PPS-43 and command squad gets PPS-43....
How much more bloody SMGs do you need in a faction???

Effectively only the command squad pps43 and strelky ppsh are used , the tank guards are doctrine specific  and i dont think any prudent Russian player bothers to upgrade ingenery save some special cases......

Guards still lack the firepower  :P :P

partisans get to retreat now...they're soooo much more worth it! And gain Vet!

Gurads are...more about resilience and all round ability rather than damage.

Otherwise they'd be an automatic pick over the other troops...

The reason i think tht some people think the Guards should be superior to other Soviet infantry is because of the manpower cost (compared to the other ones) and the name. In reality Guard units were armed with SMGs a lot due to their purpose of Shock atttacks. In reality Guard units were Shock Troops, but they were elite Shock Troops.

Having them equipped with SMGs would make little sense in the begining (because the regular Guards are meant to represent an elite defensive troop, being armed with Medium to Long range SVT-40s and grenades), but the Shock Guard upgrade should add SMGs (any SMG would work PPD-40, PPSH-41, PPS-43, but i think the Fedorov Avtomat would be the best since it would work at all ranges) to at least half the Guards to make them super versitile.

As they stand right now though they are great and effective units, but the SMGs would make them so much better.

Going half and half on long and short range weapons is not a good idea because instead of them being good at long/med like they are now or being good at med/short if they had SMG's they would be just marginal at all ranges because only half of the unit would be effective.

Guards are very resilient all round long rage unit.

If you want resilient short ranged assault unit, use sturmovie engineers.

The think about the soviets...is that they have a unit for pretty much any role you want so you can tailor your teching to your game style.

I'm sorry , my bad , guards are good as they are now , they are infact the most easily vetted infantry in the soviets , you can use them against any sort of infantry , just keep their grenade abilities recharged! ;)
