With just 50 miles to Moscow, German commanders were expecting a monumental victory in the East. When the Siberians counterattacked, the breech loading of Gefreiter Porta's Panzer cannon froze solid. The Wehrmacht retreated, and Porta was one of the few German soldiers to have seen the towering might of Moscow itself. Whether or not he would live to tell his tale is an entirely different story.
