I dunno where to put this, or if this is possible, but I was thinking it would be interesting if you could make it that you could go into buildings where the enemies were, and have your soldiers fight them in close.
Also with buildings would it be possible to tell your units, when you send them in as it is now, to face certain directions?
Also, this idea and seeing the early game conscripts gave me an idea, is it possible to give units a close combat attack, bayonets, knives, entrenching tools, etc, for when there to close so you dont have two rifle squads 3 feet from each other shooting, or conscripts just standing there?
-
I was thinking about that idea the other day, it would be so damn cool if the soldiers could fight inside the buildings. But I don't think that'd be possible, 1. it's nearly if not impossible to code and 2. it would break the game's mechanics
-
I was thinking that yesterday, but I realized then buildings will lose there value. Maybe Certain buildings can do that, broken ones?
-
Well, the American Conquest game did buildings sort of like relic did, you put people in them and they fire from them. BUT if you your own units in an enemy occupied building the one that had the superior numbers/unit type inside of the building would win, kill the others and get control of it.
While that couldnt work in this game exactly like that its a great jumping point

There are loads of games you can do this, Empire: Total War for one. But these are completely different types of games, and melee doesn't fit into CoH at all and building are supposed to have building counters, not just charge into the building with enough men and win.
-
Why doesnt it fit into it? It was commonly used in combat, especially in the eastern front and in the pacific theater.
And since the EF mod has units that have no weapons it just makes sense to atleast give those the ability to use entrenching tools, bayonetes, daggers, whatever they have to fight with.
-
It just doesn't. My brain is too clouded with paracetamol right now to debate this. Suggestions that change the fundamental features of CoH will never be implemented in this mod so don't worry about it anyway.

I was also curious why this game initially did not have hand to hand combat, seeing as Dawn of war did and it was the same developers wasn't it?
Hand to hand worked quite well in dawn of war.

DoW is more of a big armies mash together game rather than a dynamic flanking game like CoH. Melee would bog down the combat, making it more static and less what it is supposed to be. Don't get me wrong though, I absolutely love DoW too.
-
Melee would bog down combat? I dunno, seeing riflemen standing two feet appart firing at eachother and NOT hitting anything bogs down combat to me

Ok, a german runs at you, you are firing somewhere else then you realize the German is 5 feet away, you start to panic and shot a couple shots at his direction.
Sounds right to me, when someone is that close you don't have time to look at him, then aim, then fire.
-
I think that adding a melee system to CoH will just reduce intricate flanking manoeuvres to simply smashing your bigger unit into the enemy's smaller unit and the game becomes Total War.

You wouldn't have 'true mele' in ww2 and modern times. Only ones who tried it where the japanese because of the thick jungle terrain...and we all know how cost effective that method proved ::)
Sure, there would be the odd desperate hand to hand combat here and there, but when the enemy reached your lines what you got is 'close quarters, point blank firefights'.
These kind of 'assault missions' where assigned to special 'storm groups' in each army armed with smgs/shotguns/flammers+extra nades. Of all the countries in ww2 the soviet union was the only one who issued SMGs in such great numbers where entire regiments/divisions would be armed with them.
In game terms, you would need to alter the entire combat system to facilitate this 'realism' because one thing that is missing in the code is 'damage over range'. And at the end of the day, realism in not what EF mod is about.
