Bit of an odd one this but I thought I'd stick it up here in case anyone else was having the same issues.
The Alienware M11xR2 ships with two graphics cards a inbuilt Intel HD and an nVidia Geforce GT335M, the theory is using the Intel one preserves battery power when you don't need the GT335M. The laptop has software that allows you to tell individual programs which chipset to use so here's the problem :
Company of Heroes (steam version if it matters) works fine with the GT335. Installed EF, did all the updates, everything seemed Ok, tried to run CoH and it crashes (well doesn't start really just displays a Crash Handler), EF is still happily running at that point and will let you try and run CoH again (doesn't work).
Having come across this behaviour before I figure EF doesn't like the GT335 so set it to use the Intel chipset, still doesn't work.
However if I tell both EF and CoH to ignore the GT335 and use the Intel chipset everything's fine.
Pain in the bum to diagnose and the solution is obviously not ideal (I'd kinda like to use the expensive card I paid for :) ) but at least it works.
I haven't seen any discussion on this anywhere so I thought I put it here in case any fellow M11xR2 owners are having the same issues.

Could you open regedit(start menu->run->regedit) and search for this path?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Company of Heroes
or if you have a 64 bits OS this one:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Company of Heroes
Then check if the InstallLocation value is the same than your CoH directory.

Yes, it's the same directory.

Are your nvidia drivers up to date?
