I've been looking at all the Ostheer news and all and something has always been bugging me for a while. Why would I use the Ostheer over Wehr? Lets compare.
Ost gets MG34 Wehr gets MG42
Ost gets PzIII Wehr gets PzIV
Ost gets Elephant Wehr gets KT
Ost gets Pak40 Wehr gets Pak38
Ost gets a noob short-range sniper that probably cannot counter snipe reliably
Wehr gets normal sniper
Ost gets ISG inf gun Wehr gets nebel
Ost gets HT(MG34) Wehr gets HT(MG42)
Ost gets neberwerfer Wehr gets walking stuka
Seems to me, with the exception of the Pak40, Ostheer is just an outdated Wehrmacht. Wehrmacht can also buy good veterancy for all their units listed above. Thoughts?

1. For fun - this is a game, remember?
2. OH is promised to bring a new game-play style for axis.
3. OH is supposed to be some sort of "outdated Wehr", since vCoH takes place from 1944 and on.
4. It's not a matter of simply units, it's units+cost+effectiveness.
and more on...
-
Ostheer will have a various amount of spam hard counters than the Wehrmacht doesn't making them ideal for facing down the Soviets. Also, there's still plenty of stuff in here we haven't revealed yet that will make them just as, if not more appealing to play than the Wehr despite using 'older' equipment.
Seriously, wait until we reveal the entire concept, then say 'Why would I play this?'
-
You forgot to add "Ost get Luchs Wehr gets Puma"
I think it's too early to discuss about Ostheer vs Wehrmacht ::).
-
Ostheer will have different kind of vet so while both fractions tech up early in the game WH is left with better equipment but no vet.
Also units like PzIII will apear much earlier than PzIV. They will be like Stubby PzIV or a Stug.
The STG44 sniper will decrew heavy weapons quicker and probably will have more HP so he will be harder to counter than WH sniper.
Elephant will probably have the longest gun range out of all super tanks.
Finally its going to be fun, fun, fun!
-
Ostheer appears to tech very differently and uniquely. I'm very intrigued about the unit pool idea. Also, OH could have a great vetting system. Just because something is outdated doesn't mean it's awful. BARs are still better than LMG42s remember.

+1 :D

Its all about how the faction plays....you can't make any comparison when you don't even know the stats of those units.
It's like saying why play US over WH?
US-Sherman WH-PzIV
US-Halftrack WH-Halftrack
US-30cal WH-MG42
Maybe its cause...the units stats are different and so is the way the faction plays? ::)

Panzer 3 is a disguise.
Its really a tiger under a blanket 8)

There is more to a faction than just the unit types and the weapons they use. The Ostheer is a whole new faction, which makes use of a completely unique tech system, vet system and doctrines.
There is no faction that quite compares (not least the Wehrmacht) and it is designed to pump fresh life into the German factions while still remaining familiar to CoH players.
-
I would play Ostheer because it something new :-\
-
There are some people like me who actually prefer the older stuff.
Besides, the Eastern Front lasted much longer than the Western Front. Quite naturally, pre-'44 weapons make sense.
-
I'm sure most people prefer the original armies over the Opposing Fronts armies...
Quite simply, if you don't like the Ostheer (which you obviously can't judge yet), don't play as them.
-
Okay... i just leave for two and a half hours and certainly this topic went wild, for now i cleaned up the topic... Let's start again and keep on topic guys.
If you want something offensive to say and you cannot keep it to yourself, use the PM function instead of dropping the bomb here.
@IJoe
Try to be less offensive next time.
@Chancellor
Well, i must apologize, i really missed the purpose of this topic.
Now as this thread is why would you use Ostheer? meaning what makes you interest in this army and not want to compare directly with other axis factions/units... is time to type down your opinions instead of fighting ;D!
-
I'm super excited because it is a new German faction. I have always loved playing the Germans in any game and having a new faction will just give me one more group of Germans to have fun with.

I would have to agree, using old outdated stuff in war always seems to excite me, especially if that stuff has to be kept together with Duct Tape and the like. Its like the Rebals in Star Wars. Maybe the OS will have a unit that has a Gerry Rig ability.

Lol, a really slimming blanket!

I'm pretty sure we used almost exactly the same words when we were first internally discussing the art direction for the Ostheer ;)
-
As long as the "outdated" equipment of the Ostheer is significantly less expensive than the Wehrmacht, I will be a happy camper.
I keep envisioning hordes of panzer II's and III's, and I cant wait.

Outdated stuff? The Rebel Alliance?
Their fighters have SHIELDS AND HYPERDRIVES, TIE fighters and their variants don´t! How´s that outdated?

Compared to Imperial forces not todays armies :P

Well the X-Wing was top of the line but it was originally meant to be an Imperial fighter but the Rebels stole the plans. Almost everything else, though, that the Rebels had was outdated, Y-Wing, DF.9 anti-infantry battery, and Corellian corvette just to name a few, they used whatever they could get there hands on. But what is more important than the old stuff is the fact that The Rebels had to keep there stuff working with whatever was available. Hence keeping things together using Duct Tape.
Going back to the OS, I think a repair ability called Gerry Rig for a unit would be really cool. It wouldn't really restore health, but instead fix any broken parts such as turrets, engines, and tracks immediately.

With a lot of relatively weak vehicles, that are rather easily disposed, it, probably, wouldn't be really that much of a help.
Maybe, some "health" upgrades, or "resistance to break-down", like those, suggested for tracks, or some armor-skirt upgrade, would do somewhat better, greatly improving viability of the machines, deployed on the field.

The whole point of broken gun, tracks, engine is that you need to get engineers to the damaged tank instead of just pushing a botton and driving back to base.
Youre saing that it would be fun to make sticky bombs and mines useless (vs tanks).

No what I meant was an engineer unit that had an ability to immediately fix a broken part on a vehicle. Of course I'm not saying this ability is a balanced idea, just an interesting idea loosely based on the concept of Gerry Rigging.
-
Maybe Russian mechanics should get this ability to give them more use.
-
don't knock it until you try it

Then it should be called a "Magic touch" ability.
