Title: Board Games
Post by: wordsmith on April 20, 2011, 12:25:14 PM
I was wondering, do some of you boys play also a Board Games and which ones are your favorite?

I happened to play Arkham Horror some time ago and it was amazing game :)

I don't much like board games, because the A.I. is quite lackluster, but i do like Sorry!. I have the P.C. version, which actually has A.I. capable of moving the pieces, but it won't run properly on my computer. :(

Personally, I love chess. Only chess, but no other boardgames. I rather play it in RL, so no Computer chess.

Why is that? I don't like physical Chess because it's so easy to make a mistake. It's so frustrating when you make a move, only to realize a few moves later that it was illegal. :-[ I much prefer it on computer because it's impossible to fuck it up.

So your opponent can also fail doing what you decribed. It's just like a strategy game, only with fewer action :P

Yeah, your enemy can fuck up just as easily, so what? The fact that it's not possible to make an illegal move on a computer (unless the game has the option to be able to move pieces anywhere) makes it much easier to play.

...but surely kills the "oldschool" and "the way it's meant to be played" feelings  ;)

If you don't know how to play chess properly, then I have to say: Shame on you ;)

Then I bought an ATI HD6950 mewhahahahaha  ;D

Sorry to hear that, man. :'(

But you haven't stated a logical reason why physical Chess is greater that electronic Chess. Just stating something sucks doesn't really do it for me. ;)

Ok, you got me by the tail. Now I have to think of some reasons quickly:

- You can cheat in electronic chess. Means: Undo moves, set AIs difficulty (ok, doesn't really match cheating, so what)

- You can't feel the chessmen/-board, which is killing the oldschool feeling of chess (what it used to be)

- You can't face you opponent, you can't watch his eyes hushing from left to right, observe him planning his next move -> lonely and boring

- RL>PC

Ultracombo  :D

You can undo moves in real Chess, if you both agree to it. And depending on the computer game, it may not be possible to undo moves. Or you may choose not to.

Not a problem for me.

In my case, i can't see my opponent in real Chess anyway, because the only person i would have to play with is me. So playing with an A.I. is FAR more fun.

Hehe that was not the answers I was hoping for. Board games can be fun once a while.

They are only fun if you have people that share the same interests as you do. For example, I remember I used to be the only guy in my group of friends that used to play chess... In fact I even used to be the chess team captain and they didn't know until the last day of school... It was quite embarrassing ;D

Yes but there are thousands of board games, hundreds of them are very good and fun to play. And I'm not speaking about Chess, Monopoly or Scrabble :)

For example:

- Dominion
- Civilization board game
- Starcraft board game
- Warcraft board game
- Puerto Rico
- Sankt Petersburg
- Carcassonne
- Age of Conan
- Arkham Horror etc...

When I was a child, my father used to play Carcassone with me and my two sisters. It was very fun, he bought all the extentions and sometimes we spent whole afternoons playing this game. I was kind of a pro, but then the other games came.. :P

I wish to expirience sometime "Federation & Empire" board game, model is effective ... or SFB ... to the last.
Problem is ... NO ONE on Russia ever play these games. Most extended board games is WarHammer Fantasy & Battletech some a little. A see board games of that type ... I am not impressed.
F&E is still my dream.

Me and my friend have invented several quite good board games, when we were teens. I still remember one of them (the board, the rules - all about it, since I still consider it a very decent game).

I made a board game when i was a kid. I was very interested in designing videogames, but since i had neither the knowledge nor software to do so, i resorted to drawing up a game on a large piece of paper. It was pretty shitty, but it was fun to make.

I am a member of Black Creek gamers. Settlers of Cataan, War in the Pacific are popular. Dan Versson's Field Commander Series is fine. I particularly Like Rommel.

When i was kid, i remember the game ...
Chess like field, closed by square like cards. Under the some of that card hide the mines. You & your counterpart must crossing the field & attack each other.
I can not remember the name of the game.

Could you post more info about game you designed? I'm looking for some good ideas, game mechanisms etc. Board games are good change from time to time. At least you have to meet with friends personally to play so it has more social character than PC online games...

I think you mean Stratego (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/897573/stratego), at least it sound like this game.

It would take some time to put together a proper description, but I could do that, if you really want it.
