Hi all!
Like I promised, I'll show you my new map, called "Narva". For these of you who don't know where and what Narva is/was, I'll give a short explanation:
In early 1944, following the Leningrad-Novgorod Offensive, the Red Army broke the siege of Leningrad and progressed towards the West.
On January 15th, 1944, they reached the River Narva. Heavy fightins continued, and in the second half of February, the Red Army was able to build up a bridgehead on the other side. However, the German resistance was so heavy, that the Red Army had to try breaking through further to the South.
In July 1944, the Operation Narva was introduced by the Soviet forces, which led to the liberation of Narva on June 26th with heavy losses on Soviet side. Nearly all historical buildings in Narva have been destroyed and were never rebuild after WW2.
The river will be crossable everywhere, the bridge to the South and the ford to the North are only there to ensure a faster way of crossing.
Here some pictures, featuring the designated Atmosphere setting:

Another map already, Maxi!? :o
-
Yep, I'm on a roll and on holidays :P
-
hey the first look is realy good
i like the positions of the vp´s
the bridge cant be destroyed right? i dont like destroyable bridges^^
-
No, the bridge can't be destroyed. Well, at least not like normal bridges, though you can drop a shitload of arty on it and it may become impassible after a certain time ;D. But it's more of a high ford than of an usual bridge.
-
LOL, I'm playing Hearts of Iron 3 now, and as Soviet Union I'm making my stand in Narva :P and it's year 1941 :D
-
Time for a little Rendezvous then :P
-
:o Dude you are a god-like mapper! Teach me oh master! :D
-
Haha thanks :D
I will, if you pay me well.. just kidding, I will help you whenever it's possible.
The level of detail on those first screens may seem a little low, that's because I just added some clothlines and that wheel barrow, grass/crates/barrels will be added later on.
-
Looks good! I was planning on making a Narva map, but I'll leave this one up to you ;)
-
Or you could both make a Narva map, and the community can vote on which is best! :D

@Burro: Thanks! :D

I only really make maps when I want to take a break from modelling/skinning. Only reason I'd planned on Narva is I'd been reading about the German Allied Estonian forces at Narva who battled against the Soviets and found it quite interesting.
I've only just finished Railroad Station One and have much skinning to do, so its good Maxi has taken up the burden :P
-
Hmm that's weak, gained a victory without even a second of fighting.. ;)
I discovered Narva when I had some ideas for a new map, night, maybe even a summer night, dark green groves, oaks, a river, small islands of civilisation. Then I looked through Wikipedia and found an article about the Narva Operation. The name sounded quite good for a map and I took out Google Earth to compare my ideas with the reality of Narva and it fitted. Born was the map.
-
Google Earth? As in, modern day Google Earth? How similar would that location be to the world war 2 era as modern times?
-
The countryside in general doesn't seem to be changed since then..
-
Google Earth would probably be pretty good for this map as AFAIK Narva was never rebuilt.
@Maxi Do you have a list/link for all these tasty AGN maps you (and maybe Lord Rommel have produced). I have a sneaky suspicion that taken as a whole they spell CAMPAIGN. Has anyone been working on a map usable for an Operation Strachnitz scenario?
-
I don't recreate the town, I'm more into landscape and rural environments.
So first of all, what do you mean by AGN? You need to explain yourself, your whole post is currently a riddle to me.. :-\
-
My apologies Maxi.
- AGN= Army Group North.
- To the best of my knowledge the town of Narva was leveled during WWII and never rebuilt. Google Earth may confirm this but in any case would give a better picture of the geography then it would for a heavily developed area.
- My username Otto 213 is a tribute to Otto Carius. (his tiger was numbered 213 or 217). He fought a Lemburg, Dunaburg, Narva, west of Narva,(Strachnitz reference), etc. Early on in the development process LordRommel was working on several maps that could be used for a "battles of Otto Carius Type campaign" He has lobbied for this in one of the Campaign threads. I would like to see a campaign with such an orientation too.
- If the DevTeam is working on such a campaign; (as I hope), I am interested in obtaining a list of maps (and/or download links) for this part of the mod. You are certainly aware of the difficulty of modeling actual geography in a RTS game setting.
If this still doesn't make sense PM me. Entirely too many wars have been caused when one guy didn't understand what the other guy meant.
-
I'm not so sure it's a good idea to use real people in the campaign. It would fit better with Company Of Heroes if the characters and companies etc. are all fictional.
-
No problem, now I clearly understand you. There is no real connection between Lord Rommels maps and mine, also the connection to Otto Carius is unintentional, neither I work on any campaign maps, although that would be some kind of next level challenge. If they want to have me, I'm always here.. ;)
Like I said, my map doesn't contain Narva as town, it's rather the fight for the river and the bridgehead I'd like to see represented.

-
there's mod already, walki1 ::)
yes, and it sucks! :D
-
They are hugely improving it. Look at their moddb page, you will see.
-
that looks quite impressive, and a six player map too!
-
Are there any updates on this map?
Narva has always interested me, and I remember following this map way back when. I only just noticed that it hasn't come into the public eye yet.
I also remember slight feelings of resentment, as my original proposition to this mod was going to be Narva River (6), and just as I finished, the first screenshots came up.
Still, it's for the best that I didn't hand it in! This looks far better!
-
Maxi posted that he abadoned it quite some time ago. But I can be wrong though.

Sadly, it's true. Dead end of creativity.
-
That's a shame!
And you may be sick of hearing this from me, but when everything quiets down, want me to give you a hand?
-
Sure, why not? Just give it a go ;)
