Ok then, second question. Are these roads main roads or just small ones?
In the end it's up to you man, you have the whole variety of splines.. ;)
Title: Re: Noobish mapping questions post here

Main :)
And i have a problem connecting roads, example maybe when i make a bridge and i connect road with it,it looks ugly,no idea how to make them same looking  :-\
Title: Re: Noobish mapping questions post here
Post by: Max 'DonXavi' von B. on July 19, 2011, 12:42:43 PM
Rural main: road_asphalt\rural_highway (width=8)
Urban main: stone_road\bia_urban_road_02 (width=16)

You can add some variation though using different kind of splines and splats and also tiles combined with each other.

Concerning your bridge problem I'd like to see a screenshot.

There's no way to fix that, it's just the way the texures look. Use a bridge_blender object on the seam, or just make a land bridge.

You should just make ground bridges :D They're easier to handle in the longrun. Not sure how to fix your problem though :/

Set the LMB mode of the Heightmap Editor to "Set Value". Raise the terrain like you want it and in the end, adjust the height of the bridge using the H key + pressed left mouse button.

The texture problem is also easy to solve:

(http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/821/relic00346.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/684/relic00346.jpg/)

Use a Tile underneath the road that fits, grass textures don't look good in combination with cobblestone roads. I recommend Dirt\Dirt_Country_Road here.
Next step is recreating the dark lines on the bridge to appear also on the normal ground. To do this, you place the Spline nm_tracks\foot_path_01 (width=2) and select "Colorize" to the right. You may apply following settings:

(http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/4319/colorizeb.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/36/colorizeb.jpg/)

You can also add the cobblestone line as a border to the mainland, use this: stone_road\bia_cobble_stone_border_03 (width=2)
You don't need to change the color/alpha settings here.

Woah thank you so much for your help and taking time to explain to me  ;D
I will try all these soon as posible. You are like a map editing genius  :)
And i have one more super mega noob questin,so prepare for a laugh.
I can't save my map,it says i have to have 2 or more starting positions owned by different players
I did placed them from Object placement>ebps>then starting  pos 1 and pos 2,but still it won't save ???
Title: Re: Noobish mapping questions post here
Post by: Max 'DonXavi' von B. on July 22, 2011, 03:05:20 PM
You need to place one of the ebps\gameplay\starting_position_0X, the number doesn't decide about the objects owner, it just describes the variants (1 and 2 are rural HQs, 3 and 4 urban, 5 and 6 industrial, 7 and 8 holland).
You need to assign these starting positions to a player, you can do this to the right, world is the default setting, change it to player 1 and player 2 for both starting positions. You'll also need to do that to the object ebps\gameplay\map_entry_point.

Thx for the help MaxiKing6. But I have another question. How do you access the map you've created once you make it ???? I check skrimish maps and I don't see it there :P
Title: Re: Noobish mapping questions post here
Post by: Max 'DonXavi' von B. on July 27, 2011, 06:45:35 PM
What do you mean by "I check skirmish maps"? In WB or ingame?
Title: Re: Noobish mapping questions post here
Post by: Pac-Fish on July 28, 2011, 01:20:18 AM
After I made the map and clicked calculate voronoi I saved, opened up EF, and clicked skrimish game against comp. I checked the maps(ex: angoville(2)) and didn't see mine there. Was it b/c my initial map was a singleplayer map?
Title: Re: Noobish mapping questions post here
Post by: Max 'DonXavi' von B. on July 28, 2011, 01:44:52 AM
Change the map type in the Scenario Properties to multiplayer map and move all the files to
Code: [Select]
C:\Users\%username%\Documents\My Games\Company of Heroes\ww2\Data\Scenarios\MP
Title: Re: Noobish mapping questions post here
Post by: Pac-Fish on July 28, 2011, 02:23:40 AM
My folder is call SP rather than MP(which is what you have I guess). Does that matter b/c I checked again in Skrimish maps(after I saved it to Skrimish/multiplayer) and it's not there. Sorry to bother you so much :-[
Title: Re: Noobish mapping questions post here
Post by: Max 'DonXavi' von B. on July 28, 2011, 02:26:54 AM
You don't bother me. Just create the MP folder if it isn't already there. Then move your map files to the MP folder in order to make it accessable in skirmishes.

Post by: Pac-Fish on July 28, 2011, 03:12:29 AM
Thx for all the help. I got my map working and tested it versus comp. However once the game got under way I tried to build a building and it said must be in command territory. Apparently there was zero command territory anywhere and I was stuck fighting a Tier0 battle with doctrinal off-map units XD Luckily the map was small. How do you fix this ???. Also how come I can only open this map on EF, not regular CoH? Do I need to change a setting?

Edit: NVM I fixed the territry problem:P. But how do you get the map to play in vCOH?
Title: Re: Noobish mapping questions post here
Post by: Max 'DonXavi' von B. on July 28, 2011, 05:06:28 PM
The Worldbuilder automatically uses the first module file from your COH directory when it creates/loads a map, so it has probably also used the Eastern_Front.module file for your map. If you take a look at the YOURMAP.info file, you'll see modname = "Eastern_Front" to the bottom.
You could try to change it to "RelicCOH" but I don't know if that works. Just try it.
Title: Re: Noobish mapping questions post here
Post by: Pac-Fish on July 28, 2011, 10:22:07 PM
1st Q: How do you access your directory?

2nd Q: How do you fid YOURMAP.info?

Sorry I'm so lost. I honestly am starting from the ground up(and from a DIY youtube video ;))
Title: Re: Noobish mapping questions post here
Post by: Max 'DonXavi' von B. on July 28, 2011, 10:36:24 PM
No problem, everyone started sometime, so did I (without tutorials :P).

1) You can access your COH directory using the Windows Explorer, the default folder should be C:\Program Files\THQ\Company of Heroes.

2) You can find it when you view the location where your map is saved (now probably C:\Users\%username%\Documents\My Games\Company of Heroes\WW2\Data\Scenarios\MP. I used YOURMAP as a placeholder for your maps real name (cause I don't know it).

I still cant find my "YOURMAP.info" file(but I figured out how to find the directory). My file says YOURMAP.sgb. No idea what sgb stands for. Too confusing :o. This is why I'm not a developer XD.
Title: Re: Noobish mapping questions post here
Post by: Max 'DonXavi' von B. on July 28, 2011, 11:35:08 PM
I also don't know what sgb means, nevertheless, my mape has made it..
You have to have a .info file in there, there have to be following files:

YOURMAP.info
YOURMAP_id.scar
YOURMAP.sgb
YOURMAP_mm.tga
YOURMAP_tml.tga

BTW: Last post as Major.  :P

I see, you're starting from the very very bottom.
By Editor I don't mean the Worldbuilder, I mean the text Editor that is generally included in every Windows copy.
Which OS do you use?

I didn't forget the bridges, I just delay it until we cleared your fist question.

Execute it and open the file YOURMAP.info, search for modname = "Eastern_Front" then.

Hi, I have recently found a map me and my buddies used to play constantly (pre v1.7), the map stopped working when opposing fronts came out and we have sort of forgotten it:P Now that im trying to make it playable again i have hit a snag:
Only half the map is usable?
When i draw an impass map, one half of the map is red, and the rest is black, on the red part i cant run/drive or anything like that in-game. I have tried to use the impass map editor to "right-click" it all away, but it has a different color when i add some land impassibility, and when i right click the red parts, nothing happens...
So, any ideas?:)

Here you go! The starting-points are a bit random atm, the original map had them in the holes in-between the buildings, but they bugged on startup, i have also removed some objects to ensure there is room for all the buildings!

Title: Re: Noobish mapping questions post here

i dont know, we have never played victory point in this map...
2 sec and ill fire it up and see...

*edit*
Ok, so I took the original map, removed the objects you marked on you previous post, (+changed the outline of some zones), but didnt move anything else... If i now host a annihialate(?) game it starts and works as it should, if i start a victory point game, it becomes a annihialate(?) map when the loading is done.

So.. I guess i have fixed whatever i accedentaly broke before:P
Cheers!

I'm having trouble with hedge splines: There's always gaps between them, even if I set the spacing to a minimum it doesn't seem to stop this. The best I've been able to do is duplicate and displace hedge splines - about three splines for each hedge. Even still, the random rotation, and the fact I have the spline choosing between 3 hedge objects, means there are still gaps. Can someone tell me how to do hedges properly? Thanks.

Another hedgerow question: Should I worry about adding a deform to my hedge splines, i.e. is it something done in, say, Angoville? Also, what's the best shape profile to use? Thanks.

There is now problem with adding a deform to your hedgerow splines, try to round the deform, using the tool which appears after you click on the "Edit profile" button.

The red ones can´t be removed, because they appear as a result of placed map objects (so you have to remove the map object).
The other ones are part of the Impass Editor, so you can remove them manually.

If I want a purely visual effect on the ground, is it better to use decals or splats? I opened up the Angoville map that I found in one of the EF folders and noticed it had no decals; it was all splats.

Either update the impass map :P (Overlay > Regenarte all pathfinding)
or there are some objects under the earth or they are part of a object spline.

splats can have cover decals can't.

I think decals are "cheap" versions of splats and may be disabled on low graphic settings.

Ok. I was creating a map called "NearKharkov (6)" when i closed the pc without save. Then my PC told me that I have programs which I haven't closed - one of them was the worldbuilder (i forgot to save my map and close it -I use Windows 7) and I went to worldbuilder and closed it.The next day I opened again the worldbuilder and it told me that it cant open it.Now I have the map in sga file(I luckily expored package) but worldbuilder can't run it.I have deleted the first file because of my nerves  :-X
Can I change the sga file again to the file which world builder works?
Can I do something to work again with my map???

unpack the map with Corsixs mod studio. Or use the SGA unpacker (should work with CoH too)  (http://dawnofwar.filefront.com/file/Dawn_of_War_SGA_Archives_Unpacker;70187[/url)

Stamps are basicly the copy & paste function of the worldbuilder, you selected a couple of objects, splines, spalts & decals and "stamp" them.
In the vCoH Worldbuilder the stamp tool is broken so make sure to check out this website for Cope's stamp tool fix. (This will also allow you to save Atmosphere Presets)

I have tryed this aswell, happens to me when certain tile textures are blended together (mostly dirt)

Its located under objects-walls (can't remember the exact sub category but either concrete or metal) If you are having trouble finding object you can download the Object catalogue , all objects in WB are displayed there + information about where to find them, theres a spline and splats catalogue  aswell (very usefull)

If you use more than 7 tiles in 1 chunk graphic errors will occur. Don´t use more than 4 tiles in 1 chunk! Use splats instead. For some odd reason it will be better for the performance.

Hi guys. Quick noobish question here. In Worldbuilder some objects have variously sized green or red circles around them when selected. What do these mean, if anything. Curious. Thanks!
Title: Re: Noobish mapping questions post here
Post by: Max 'DonXavi' von B. on May 15, 2012, 10:26:28 AM
I don't know exactly, but the objects with a circle around them make units use certain lines of speech ingame. So the tractor, which has a green circle around it, makes some unit say "when I'm at home, I'll finally buy a tractor" or something equal, I just know the German version of it.
That's just a guess though.

Check in the Debug window of the Worldbuilder must be something like "mounting Eastern_Front.module" there. If you use Soviet wrecks and stuff you need the Eastern Front module otherwise it could crash.

I'll create one once I can access my PC again.

Save yourself some work pal. You've already given me a tutorial on stairs  :D

Ah, I light in the darkness of my brain! ;D

Stairs are visual-only objects, so they don't create a walkable area upon them, you need to make the terrain fit the stairs elevation and angle perfectly beneath them.
Best way to reach that is this:

1) Create a clean edge using the height of the top stair and a brush size of 5/feather of 0. The edge should be at almost two-thirds of the distance from the top stair to the bottom stair.
Make sure the edge continues on both sides of the stair to prevent the ground beneath the stairs to become to low at the outer sides. This is how it should look like now:

2) Use the RMB to smooth the edge, also at the left and right side of the stair. It will cover the stairs completely first, but you can fix it by setting the first third from the bottom stair to the ground level again. Then smooth it again. after doing this 5-6 times, you should reach something equal to this:

3) Now you can add support walls to the stairs to make it look even better. The stairs work properly now.

I hope that was helpful and you could understand it  ;D

Awesome *thumbsup*

Now on to an ACTUAL question:

I'm having issues with determining the number of territories (and their type/yield). While Over-all map balance is fine at this point, a lot of my territories are much too large. The map I'm working on is a mid-sized 2-vs-2, divided in halves by a (flooded) river (I use an 18x18 'horizon' mesh - to give an idea of total size, not all of which is playable).

My Current layout is:
FUEL
2x 'Medium'
2x 'low' (The ones in the gameplay folder that aren't tagged as either medium or high)

MUNITIONS
2x 'High' (are also VPs)
6x 'Low'

MANPOWER
1x 'high' (Is also a VP)
2x 'Medium'
8x 'Low'

What is the best choice of "filler" territories? Should I add any more munitions/fuel territories?

~JD

PS: I using the 'working tittle' of "JDs_Bleak Valley (4p)" - inspired by the 'forest and trenches' map here: http://www.easternfront.org/forums/index.php?topic=6856.msg92067#msg92067 - Is there any historically accurate scenarios for such a map (Preferably late war or mid/late Autumn)? If so, any suggestions for a 'final' map name?

Hyall,

before asking questions, ill try to answer one:

What is the best choice of "filler" territories? Should I add any more munitions/fuel territories?

~JD

I would use "paint  null territory" to smaller the sectors..

(overlay, draw overlay map, draw sector map, paint null)

Ive got some questions, too-

Q: how do I damage a building, by more than 10%?
can I set a value for "damage building" anywhere?!

Q:  My map description always sucks at 20 characters...
I tried to use the FAQ- it wont work :(

I edited the .info text in editor, saved it, started WB, extracted the file and then saved the map in WB...

Map description always fails! Text hasnt more then 255 chars... How do I do better?

I would use "paint  null territory" to smaller the sectors..

Don't do this, it doesn't make sense. If you have map space to spare and you already used many fuel/munition points, use "mapower_ressource_points" to fill the empty space. You may also want to adjust the sectors size/shape. To do that, click on "Overlay" and select "Territory sectors". First of all, you won't see anything spectacular. Open the territory tool (TER in black on a button in the tool tab) and click on "Calculate voronoi" to the right of the screen. Given that you placed sector points before, your map will now fill with various coloured areas which you can edit, just use the TER tool.

I recommend just to use "paint null" on uncrossable areas such as underneath groves, deep water or comparable, not anywhere on the map, otherwise you will be unable to build something on that spot ingame.

Now I'll answer your questions, SSonne.

Q: how do I damage a building, by more than 10%?

Given you used "Edit state" > "Building damage", you can easily move and enlarge the area of damage by clicking on "Edit" in the "Edit state" window once you added "Building damage". Default damage scale is 5, you can experiment with other values if you like. Likewise, you are able to move the area of damage to where you like.
Here, I recommend not to use more than four different "Building damage" states, otherwise the area around the building becomes laggy.

Q:  My map description always sucks at 20 characters...

You can change that in two ways. Either use a key (like Relic did it with their maps and EF does it with its maps), or edit the info file after you finished your map completely and you won't open it anymore.
Every time the WB loads your map, including your .info file, the map description is limited to a certain number of characters. It just cuts everything that exceeds this certain value. Save your map description in another file and paste it into the .info file once your map is ready to be released. This way you guarantee the WB doesn't cut the text anymore.
Dealing with keys is more complicated, thus I won't mention how to do it here.

I hope I was able to help you.

Maxi, Head Mapper.
