Is it possible to add the "Maintain Command Range" action to the Command Squad?
...Or is it pointless because the Command Squad doesn't give offensive/defensive bonuses like the Lieutenant? :-\

Quite pointless. The Command Squad's veterancy buffs are global and, unlike the Commonwealth officers, it's good for fighting.

"Maintain command range/Follow On" would be a good ability to add to almost any unit. It would allow for a skirmish line to protect line infantry prior to assault; Infantry to follow armored assault (or vice versa). A most useful tool to lessen micro burdens.

actually it's better to micro units yourself, 'cos those "following" units don't take cover and behave like 100% idiots.

I do not advocate using a follow on command for combat. I envision it more as a tool for approach to combat maneuver.

Basically Otto wants to form a double-line type formation using the follow command to maintain the 2nd line. However, the command doesn't work well in CoH, where you can't group select following units so they may miss their retreat. Also, the actual follow will screw up if you rotate your squad to fight off a flank because the following squad will always try to stay at their 6 o'clock. This can lead to them running out into the open toward the enemy. In this case, it's always better to micro the units yourself.

what about a no turning back ability. commissars during the early war period periodically shot soldiers that ran or didn't obey orders, even killed officers who would listen. my suggestion is that the command squad stays behind a group and then activate an ability that increases defense but you cant retreat

Doesn't Propaganda war strategy has an ability that increases defense? Doesn't RBS with DP 28 have hold ground thing? I feel like Command Squad doesn't need to be commanding. Captain USSR should be fighting enemies of the motherland instead of following!
Tip: Do not use Guards as Tank Guards. Only use tank desants to directly support tanks, unless you go combined arms.
