Title: Dynamic LoS
Post by: Trooper425 on April 09, 2012, 12:02:33 AM
I've only seen one strategy game implement a dynamic line-of-sight system: World in Conflict. For people who don't know what I mean, dynamic LoS means that units see (and shoot) farther, but their view can be blocked by buildings, forests, etc. My question is: Is it possible to implement dynamic LoS in Company of Heroes?

As usual, move this to a better place if need be.

I believe the folks working on the Coh Afrika Korps mod are attempting this. I expect it is too not-vCoh as regards EF, and might spoil greater acceptance in the MP market. Great idea though. I would like to see LOS modifications for weather conditions and time of day incorporated into your Idea. Maybe in CoH2?

Company of Heroes already has a semi-dynamic LOS. Your troops won't fire at what they can't see. (Example: Hide behind the church, hide behind the hedge, hide behind the tall stone wall)

Yeah like if there is a flipped over truck your troops can hide behind it even if the enemy is on the other side of that truck. I had to learn this the hard way >_<

Hide your kets behind a hedge and cap on the other side.

^^THIS^^ is what I'm kind of worried about. I don't like how, even if you can't shoot, you can still magically see through buildings and such. It provides a magic safety net in crowded areas. I hwant to see a cityfight that is real hell, because you can see a long way down the streets, but not around the corner. :P

Men of War has dynamic LOS. Even it you are looking in certain direction you can't see infantry laying in the bush, ditches, craters or just behind the building. This added to one-shooting tanks with panzerfaust... just  ;D

IF you want to increase the fog of war for your own enjoyment, don't use the tactical map and set your camera POV real low to the ground. You may still get a red image of your opponent but its closer to the experience you indicate you want.

I've also noticed that when firing over hills shots will sometimes go THRUGH the terrain. This is most easily seen with MGs because of their high volume of fire and the tracers they use. Kind of what I'm talking about, kind of.

I noticed when AT guns fire on elevated terrain, they often hit the hill :(

Sometimes tank and other cannon shots hit the hill, though I believe I've seen them go through on rare occasions as well.
