Of course, there is time to think about it :)

On a certain turn of the allies, commanders can decide to call D-Day, to mass invade Normandy. Commanders need to choose to do this wisely (IE it is not wise to do this on the first turn the allies have because the Germans will have the initiative. If they can take Stalingrad then all they have to do is reinforce against the western allies and they win.)

The benefits are that it splits the germans up. It turns the battle into a two front war.

On the downside, allied players with the soviet union will have to choose to move to France and invade, weakening the soviet lines slightly.

I will referee, and there will be new threads created for each round. Players whom win a battle will need to submit replays as proof.

The thing with that is you'd have to wait, because you are joining late you'd have to wait for the delay to wear off.

I would just sign up as Soviets and then play until D-Day where you can then switch. This tourney appeals to all skill types, Pros and Newbs alike :)

I think it would also give you some battlefront experience if you play alongside players like Dennis/DontHateme or Yau/Snug.

Besides, you've gotta help your bros out :) How will they hold Stalingrad without the help of many people? ;)

Thank you Cranialwizard for making this happen!

My pleasure :)

Well, if you really want to play allies, what you could do is play soviets, and ask for a defensive position (IE you don't see too much combat and don't plan attacks) and then when D-Day comes you can switch over. I'll put your info down for PE though.

Too shoot medic? engineer spam? building a gigantic barbed wire line formed as a penis ? ( Not that I really do that.. once)

Anything done in a regular game is fair game. The only issue where I can see a reevaluation and a denial in credit is when a bug is abused to bring about victory (IE Kat ground)

seriously. terrible idea. + you could ask your teammates what doctrine he has before game and change your whole play style from there to account for it.

@Panzer4life, i would love to do some 2v2s, because i definitely also do more 1v1 games and so dont know many 2v2 maps well. however, due to my monitor breaking, i cant play until i get a new one, maybe this weekend.

Thats not the problem. The problem is the fact that it locks players into playing their faction in spečfic ways, sometimes which don't work universally against all factions. Other problems occur like team games. What if there are two PE Players in a team up and they both have SE? Very weak combo
Title: Re: The Great Patriotic War-Eastern Front Tournament/Event
Post by: stealthattack1 on March 29, 2012, 07:50:25 PM
especially if they go up against tank heavy soviets. dont think a couple booby traps are gonna stop a t-34. so yea, nothings wrong with teams communicating, i actually think its a good thing if teams want to brief their mates on tactics used often by certain players, but locking a player down to a certain doctrine would be bad.

Its like a hybird of US and Wehr. Early game you run around out capping and flanking and later on you either swarm with elite infantry or push with heavy armor. Not necessarily easier :P. You should try some 1v1 games before you play in this tourney. PlayervPlayer games are very different from PlayervCPU

I actually never played much EF competitively. I wouldn't mind doing some games as or against Russians for practice, I am rank 10-11 on vanilla CoH though so I do have experience just not As or Against Russian Players.

Sounds like you'd be apt to learn. There's plenty of time folks :) Use the time to familiarize yourself with the soviets and adapt new strats  :D

The reason there is such a sign up delay is for several reasons, but allowing players to familiarize themselves is one of them.

Just PM me in case you are willing to accept my offer.

I think if there was a way to determined HOW badly you lost compared to a slight lost this would be more interesting. IF you lose completely, then you lose more territory or whatever. If you are slaughtered or leave the game, you lose more. Or you could look at the match's Kills. Either war, it will make the people least inclined to leave the match early as they have a chance to come back as just a slight lost.

That doesn't really seem fair. If you have a line of inexperienced players than more professional teams can take advantage of that for quick victory, IE Push them back.

Will there be matches when like 2 soviet divisions attack one singel german? So there will be a 1vs2 game? I mean. Its upp to the commander of each side how many divisions he want to attack with right? XD
Might be heavy unbalancded but hey, if the german commander doesnt help another division as backup. There is really only one guy to blaim? ;)

I don't think that's the way it'll work. That's extremely unfair to the 1 player and it's obvious whom wins the battle there. It's going to be fun, but being ganged up on isn't fun.

How to decide which players fight against the other ones? Randomly?
Title: Re: The Great Patriotic War-Eastern Front Tournament/Event

Once the map is set up players will speak with high command on how they want to place themselves and what strategies to pursue. It won't be randomly selected, althoight if you join late that could be a consequence.

Well, not officially at least. There will be an organizational phase of most likely a week given so that players can report in and commanders can try to figure out how good some players are as opposed to others.

Would be cool if we can order attacks on some maps/places but the enemy would not know who is attacking where, they would only be told to arrange defenses on the maps that is attacked. This would make it possible to send fake attacks / decoys on some maps to spread out the enemys defenses/players so they wont know where the elite attack will be.

It sorta over complicates things. Makes it unfair for the weaker players too, because bad guessing would result in steamrolls.

Besides, attack orders will likely be posted early in the week to give many people a chance to attack throughout the week.

I think this tourney is more about team vs team rather than interesting and funky tactics so things like:

This would make it possible to send fake attacks / decoys on some maps to spread out the enemys defenses/players so they wont know where the elite attack will be.

Would quite honestly be fun but would end up in a "steamroll" as Cranial put simply because inexperienced players will have to fight an opposing team spearheaded by pro players (lets be honest, you know that will happen :P)

No, it will be VP based.

However, all map types will be offered. Maps like Vire River Valley WILL be in the tournament, however not extremely important to the whole campaign.

There is a possibility that if you don't do something like this, then the team with less numbers of good players will get overwhelmed when their teammates fuck up.  If you think about it, less experienced players are going to get owned by more experienced players no matter what, when they inevitably have to fight them.

By being able to give fake attacks and decoys, the team with more noobs would be able to lessen the battle reliance of less experienced commanders while putting them to better use as decoys and what-not, and have the better players be able to take on the hardest blows of the enemy.

Not neccesarily, if high command and players play their cards right, the "inexperienced" players align themselves in one section for fighting and the more experienced players have another section to fight in.

Also, decoys create headaches for both players and myself, as I have to keep track of who is attacking who on a more discreet level which isn't very feasible. The other thing is that players won't actually know whom they're attacking, so theoretically they won't know whom their opponents are and the players can't organize between each other what day would be a good day to meet up and play.

Tbh i just think its gonna be the same players fighting against the same players during the whole tourney then. Im certain its just gonna be the best team stomping the weakest team for a safe win over and ovvaa - Or the best teams attacking eachother over and over again. Actually i think your way with ppl knowing who attacks who will cause bigger match making problems because the person who is going to be attacked has to find time to play against the specific oponent and that guy may be in a totally different timezone. With my suggestion the commander  can just take anyone who is avaible and put them into the defence, rather than have to wait for 2 specefic guys to find the time to play against eachother.

or, to even make this more complicated, we could map this all out in the real world. players could have balanced starting positions, dictated by cranial in order to make games equal, and high command could re-arrange players by diverting troops to different positions based on what high/low level player concentrations there were. commanders would only have a certain number on move per turn, and some moves, if extremely long, would take more than one move to get there. this would add to strategic gameplay in the turn based area, as well as more competitive gameplay in the real time gameplay.

EDIT: i can edit a map picture to make this more understandable. (and will shortly)

I have a idea. Maybe instead of letting all players play on the front at once, its random turn based. So the same commander won't play over and over (we all know the more professional players will be both captains AND always leading the assault). And if there is any imbalance (like me vs a balancer XD) then Cranial can simpky change ppl. And if the same person appears twice then reshuffle :P

It will be more based on command and less based on me. Simply put, there will be a mix up of the pros and the other players, so everything is sort of spread out and there's not a OMGWTFBBQSAUZ spearhead. There will be switching rules, however that will be in the event that someone is losing consistently in a spot and can not seem to fight back. This is no fun for them, so they have the option to file for a switch with the commanders, where they can ask the professional players of whom wants to switch with such person. There will be a limit on how many switches can be made per turn and how many turns a person must wait until they file for a switch.

It depends how many people join the tournament. At this rate, there will only be 1, maybe 2 high commanders on each side. If there were, say, 50 people to join on each side, there would for sure be 3-5.

Im just saying. We both know there are a number of pro players here and perhaps an even larger number of inexperienced players here. That fine. But the high commandeers will place their best players in the most vital spots and will have them typically attacking, with less experienced players in the back or on the defensive with other pro players. Its the truth. We need a system or rule so this doesn't always happen, every week. Maybe limit the number of battles or have a time limit if you exceed a # of battles in one week. I mean I don't mind seeing pros fight pros. That always welcome and a good learning experience. But I dont want to see it EVERY week.

I understand the concern but I don' think it's fully understood how the tourney will progress yet. More details to be posted of course, and there's a considerable amount of time to change things. Each player will have 1 attack turn when it is his or her team's turn to attack. They may choose to attack a territory (if enemy held) adjacent to them. All types of players will be arranged throughout the map in a fair way, based on where the player would like to be placed and where Command thinks they should be placed. At the beginning of the tourney Commanders of each side will have to submit their version of the map for their side to me for a confirmation, to ensure that all the inexperienced players will be left for defense and the pros for the attack will not happen.

I think you're worrying a bit too much about a subtle things. Commanders won't have as much power as you're crediting them. They are more like advisers for the team, they won't make live or die decisions for the most part.

Just FYI, seems like the tournament can begin on or after May 13th. Signups will probably close before then so maps can be organized. (May 5th-> May 13th I have 7 exams)

While it sounds like a fantastic idea, there are preparations that have to be made but that will not be able to be completed within a week.

Furthermore I don't want to start the tourney and then May 5th go "Cya guys I have exams BBL!!!" And leave the tourney hanging for 9 days or so.

Cranial's idea is most the best right now. But even the best Soviet player can't defend whole front. If anyone sign up for this tournament, they have to do their best first and cry for help later.
And yeah, it's a game anyway (ppl win and other lose). Things in life are always difficult, it will be easier and better if you have the ball(s) to improve yourself. ;D
Right now there are somethings I'm not fully understand, how many attacks a faction can make in 1 turn? And what about a mass D-day, how does it really work?
Title: Re: The Great Patriotic War-Eastern Front Tournament/Event
Post by: stealthattack1 on April 05, 2012, 01:09:53 AM
@cranial, if you could show the overall map + which territories are adjacent i think that players would get more of an idea of how battles will play out. as of yet i think they see it as random battles happening, for example, whoever wants to fight a battle can fight at d-day in the morning, Causaus in the afternoon, and Berlin at dusk.

Well, as Axis I have difficulty to stand Soviet horde in 1 v1 so maybe I can switch to  Allies, need practice. But in 2v2 I'm more comfortable with both so I can stick to Axis anyway. Question:

There will be some restrictions about Reward Units? All reward units are available or only some?

Hmm, I never quite considered that. Were you thinking of limiting Staghounds? What did you have in mind?

Not sure I should do that, if all players were to agree to it maybe...

This is a great event, i like to play a game wich means something to a bigger plan. Congratulations for making it happen and good luck.

I have some questions:

1. Allies need 80% of the territories to win. They start with how many %? Because, for example, if they start with 40%, is a extremelly unfair win condition, they could play far better, achieve 78% and loose.

2. How many people in the organization? This is much work for only one person. And i think would be good have like three to five moderators to judge somethings that rules eventually didnt predict, or cheat suspicious.

Suggestions:

1. More attacks by turn. One attack by each player looks more like WWI. I would suggest each side have at least one bonus action by turn, to match the war of mobility. Perhaps Allies could have more actions because of their historical logistic supremacy.
2. Siege. Sometimes a territory will be completelly surrounded by enemy. This faction should have limited turns to break siege(like three turns), if they couldnt do it, they loose the territory autommatically.
3. Air assault. Each side could have limited opportunities to make air assault, attacking some territory behind enemy lines.

Would be fair to limit Staghounds IF you limit the number of Grenadiers vet3 with Schreks.

I think if we let specific reward units in *cough*Stag*cough* there will be cries of outrage and illegitimacy. I mean as we can see:

Would be fair to limit Staghounds IF you limit the number of Grenadiers vet3 with Schreks.

There is already a start to the "Stag spam is OP" conversation here (no offense is meant).

This event is based upon Supersoca's tournament, but I also doubt he invented it ;). Also, SuperSoca was going to help us on this, but looks like he's very busy with RL.

@Stag
AFAIK the Staghound in EF has not the same issue than the vanilla Stag, you can try it if you like and tell me if the issue is there :).

IMHO the best way is no reward units...

BUT....(a big BUT  ;D).......

They're part of the game so I can't find enough reasons to exclude them.
Without them we surely exclude all discussions about OPness, Unfairness and other...but...............  :P

Woah, ok. Lots of questions to answer. Lets get to it folks :)

1. Allies need at least 80% of territories or Axis need at least 20% of territories (Allies > 80/Axis > 20) to win when a specific time will be called when the tournament will end. I have not yet decided when it will "Officially" end.

It certainly will not be like "Ok allies have 80% of territories they win now." A time limit will likely be placed in the event that there are multiple stalemates and it doesn't seem like one team will completely dominate another.

2. I have multiple people that have agreed to help me from things from 2D Art (THANKS SPIKE :D ) to movies (THANKS MAXI :D) to organization and casting (THANKS SUBLIMES + DENNIS :D). So far, it seems everything looks like it's moving smoothly, so I don't think we'll need many more people on board. Though help is certainly appreciated.

1. I believe 1 attack order by each player is the most fair way to do it. I will be looking more into details but players can choose to use their attack order, team up with another teamate to do a 2v2, or just simply not attack depending on the surroundings. Giving one side more attack orders instead of another obviously gives advantages to the other faction. (In this scenario, the Allies) By Default, the allies will be able to attack more because they will be more spread out, however the Axis currently have more players.
2. I have not yet determined how "Cities" will play a role. I believe that it will be more territory based, though I suppose that if a territory is cut off and surrounded and the opposing team can not break it after several turns I will look into providing a bonus of sorts.
3. Interesting concept, however if that were the case the team using "Air Assault" will obviously attack the key objective, Berlin or Stalingrad. Since CoH is a ground based game, I think this tournament should also stay this way.

@Stag
AFAIK the Staghound in EF has not the same issue than the vanilla Stag, you can try it if you like and tell me if the issue is there :).

The Staghound and the Kangaroo are the only two reward units that I could see abusing in the tournament...HOWEVER, as in most tournaments, they are allowed for deployment and play, and since the Staghound issues were fixed I do not think I will limit reward units.

Which answers your question Panzer4life, no, you will not be forced to use the Flak 88. Nor do you have to always go Luftwaffe :D

Before that, a COH:O tourney was made, credit doesn't have to be given to a type of tourney that is used.....

Stags aren´t allowed in the upcoming gr tournament either. Also the sherman jumbo shouldn´t be allowed.

EF fixed the fag suppression. Besides, the more limits the more headaches. Honestly if a player wants to use the jumbo he should be able to.
Doesn't matter about GR.

Over the Calliope? You think?

Reward units will not be excluded. If you want to use them, go for it. Only balance issue I really see is the Stag Suppression, and it's been fixed, so I think we'll be fine to include them.

All replays will need to be uploaded to the board for review and confirmation. So if there's any abuse that's extremely profound then I (or another judge) will intervene.

Forgot to answer this! Sorry Mr. Q :(

Each Attack/Defense period will last 1 week. You can order your attacks and then organize what time to battle your opponent for a whole 7 days.

There will be 1-3 team leaders per team, depending on how large teams get and how well each player is suited for his faction. Leaders should be seen as experienced and knowledgeable of the faction(s) they choose and can be regarded as advisory for the team and helping them make strategic moves for the map.

As for division, it depends entirely on the team's decisions as a whole. I am looking into a sub-forum system to where teams can converse and plan strategies, without having the other team players intervene ;)

This is not the Wohlfahrt. You can't hand out money to that many people, especially if you want to make it a high prize. Even if you offer 10$ to each of the winners, that's still a lot of money out of pocket for a 15-20 man team.

Early Ostheer access is a much better prize because it doesn't matter if the teams are large or small it's a good prize for someone whom does not already have such access.

Ostheer Beta will be released a great deal of time before it is released publicly, therefore it is a grand prize for those whom do not currently have this access.

You could also play for, I dunno, Fun.

Likely, we will also have to resort to using some Vcoh maps on the EF as well as on the WF, because there are not enough EF maps to support larger numbers like the ones presented so far.

The WF will open up when allied command (and players) believe it will be a good time to call D-Day. At that point some EF players will be redirected to the WF, and the Axis players will have to defend their territories. (Axis will start with holding France as a whole.)

There will be games of all types on all fronts.

And also, how will teams communicate amongst each other, and how will battles be organized?

That was sort of what the sign-up period was for, for players to meet up and play against each other, to get ready.

The tourney is planned to begin next sunday, as in the first post.

You can join at any time :)

However if you join past the 13th you will have to wait 1 turn in order to attack.

I'm joining allies when I come up with a witty division name, Glimmerman133 promised to sign in but he's not much of a forum guy.

I'd actually prefer for 1 axis person to switch to allies. Could be anyone.

Well in that case it would be 14-13 :P. Then we'd need another Axis player XD.

Maybe something to do with Italians(no offense meant ;)). My name has to do with fishes (which I like) so maybe your name should be something related to you ;). IDK any Italian regiments so can't help you :P

Edit: Vito's army? XD. I remember your text once said "Vito does not approve of........." that's why :P

The Axis is already a superior team statistically.

It's cool. I'd be joining Allies so an Italian name wouldn't fit so well.

Here's a first render of the TGPW map - so you can imagine how it'll look like. I still need to split the map into territories though.

Note: This version is just 1/4 of the original map size (4800*2700).

Not trying to sound like an elitist douche, but IMO if the current list of players stays the same, then I think Germany can safely pull off a Barbarossa.  If we let Germany start right off at the gates of Stalingrad, I doubt the tourney will last more than 2 turns lol

There is a stack up method. As you (Axis) come closer to your objective, you will have to win consecutive battles in order to win. (This increases the chances to lose an attack)

This will occur when you are close to your objective. (Berlin, Stalingrad, Moscow, perhaps others)

I'm gonna complete the rules list once my exams are over.

It runs for the whole week, every week. All games need to be completed by Saturday each week I think so they results can be collected and we make our Sunday update. Then, the next round begins. Everyone will probably need to sign in on the first day, when the forums come up and orders will be given out. Also, everyone needs to be familiiar with the rules.

Win/Lose conditions have been slightly altered on the official.

Besides, rushing isn't so much of a viable tactic. You've got to think strategically. What if you rush for Stalingrad, but get caught with your pants down half-way there while the allies rush into Berlin? You can't suddenly hop back to defend your capital.

You may still discuss the Tournament in this subform on this thread until it is appropriately closed. You may also still sign up, however starting at Midnight Eastern Standard Time on Sunday, May the 20th, you will be subject to the delayed recruitment rule which states that you may not attack or defend for 1 subsequent turn.

Cheers everyone. :)

Whenever your team arranges the attacking orders for this week. Everyone will need to sign in and nominate commanders. Then you can discuss where to attack and post it to the main board. Then we'll arrange who will defend the territories and it will be left up to the players to decide when to play during the week. Everyone has until Sunday to play their games out so the attack orders had better be done as soon as possible.

SIGNUPS FOR AXIS ARE NOW CLOSED

If you would like to still join, you will have to do so as Allies. There are two slots still open to allied players.

If you would still like to play, message me. I will survey and see if there are players signed up that do not reply/respond and aren't active. I will replace them with reserve players.

My post is meant to say only 1 open spot.

However I can put your friend on reserve incase one of the allies does not show. It looks like one of the allies is MIA.

Signups do not mean you are in the tourney. You'll be held on reserve for the moment. I hope everyone reads the things that we post.

The tourney has already started and signups started way back in March. I had hoped that more would sign in then so we wouldn't have to lock the tourney off because of map restriction.

Here's the links to the Round 1 shoutcast. I deeply apologize for the delays. I ran low on time with projects and exams taking priority, and had to export the shoutcast in 2 parts multiple times to get it right. I want it to be as good as quality as I could get it for you guys!

Actually the Axis have had a fair amount of reserves added and the inactives purged. The list seems pretty OK at the moment.

The Allies have a few who are going inactive too and thus need to be replaced. By Wednesday the changes will be done.

You were put up for slate for inactivity roughly after Round 2 but recently denied access to the Axis subforum on the basis that you did not sign in/reply to the threads or make an attempt to stay active.

This can be appealed and I can re-add you as a reserve once I get the allied team sifted.

Reporting in. I apologize for the long silence from me. Ive been very busy with real life and havent been able to go on Eastern  Front forums. Sometimes all I get to do when infront of a computer is check my mails and complete my assignments. I realise Ive been knocked out of the tournament but I thought if I approach the organizers nicely and sincerely Ill be able to get into the competition again? Ive broken Rule #2 and maybe breaking it again with this so Im not expecting anything pretty to come out of this. Anyways Ill leave it to the Tournament team.

Cheers.

Title: proposal: non-show up -> defeat
Post by: [SBI]Keule on July 29, 2012, 04:24:41 AM
ok, i like to play in this tourney and it's ok having dates at sunday 3am and things as i play against guys from far away, but at least these dates have to take place. doodle helps for finding a date, but it does not teach discipline.

here's the thing:

i propose that a game is counted as a defeat if any team does not completely show up within agreed date time +30 minutes or has not the time for playing the number of games agreed before.

familiy happens, "things coming up" happens. but the other guys are waiting for nothing and tried hard to make it on their side. at least they should get the victory.

maybe this will lead to higher discipline.

what do you think?

I see where you're coming from and I kinda agree but I think if you do that people will get upset at this tourney and start to squabble

Sorry I was late, I was checking in the forum and at the time you posted, I was posting :P

If you're in reference to yourself, Klein and I both showed within the given time periods.
If you're referring to us, well, I don't think we deserve a victory on the basis that your team mate had to leave. Likely, he would be punished in this instance. I'm debating what to do for the match.

Title: Re: Sign-In and Discussion Thread
Post by: [SBI]Keule on July 29, 2012, 11:46:51 PM
@cranial: i don't refer to our game at all.

@all: it's just a proposal for the tourney, that

1. missing an agreed date leads to a defeat until
2. the other side is willing and able to shift the date and this date takes place.

This makes 'showing up' on an agreed match date less arbitrary.

I think they should just be deleted. If you recycle them and a person who was once Allies goes to Axis they see what was written about them. Same goes for a Axis to Allies switch. Just delete the personal threads and leave the essential ones (like rules, maps, data logs, etc)

And maybe keep the format or structure of some threads.

I'm just curious, what did the Axis wrote :P

Im sure u are :P
