Eastern Front / Re: Best Fighter Aircraft of WW2?
« on: February 20, 2011, 04:37:29 PM »
Test flights of a protype dont prove it's abilities.  The Ho 229 concept was the foundation for the future of aviation, that's a fact.  You wouldn't consider the Arado 234 the best bomber of WW2 just because it had many good ideas in it's design.  The Me 262 incorporated conventional and new design ideas for the time, got it produced and into the fight.  Showed what I could do against the enemy if placed in the hands of veteran pilots.  The design was just a baby step in the evolution of the warplane(20% increase in speed), but it seemed like a quantum leap at the time.   Politics play a bigger role in delivery of most concept weaponry than we realize.  If those who write the check for it dont understand it, it can be delayed forever.  Especially during wartime.

The flying wing design is the future, but the problem they all(Northrup's also) had early on was vertical instability.  All modern fighters use some of the aspects of the flying wing.  Most built in the last 40 years have some form of blended wing/fuselage design.  They are un-flyable without modern computer control systems. None of the many great fighters from WW2 are worth a dime if there are no pilots available.  If the Me262 would have been produced as originally scheduled, when Germany still had some of their experienced pilots alive the carnage would have been bad for allied bombers, even with escorts.  However, the end result of the war would be the same(imho).  Industrial capacity trumps everything in conflict.

ME262 is hands down.  Designed at the same time as the other top vote getters(P-51, Spitfire, FW-190, Meteor, Etc...) under constant bombardment which interupted production of all material.  The quality of their jet engine technology was lacking due to metal failures in the hot section.  That Jumo design is the basis for modern aircraft engines of today.  It would have been in production sooner, but Hitler wanted it used as a bomber(dumb idea, imo), then changed his mind again to finally use it as a fighter.  P-51 was excellent, but simple advantage of overwhelming numbers made it unstoppable.  Brits won battle of Britain because the Germans quit bombing their airfields, they where within a couple weeks of knocking the RAF out, even with obsolete aircraft like JU-87, HE-111.  They had numbers on their side early in the war.  Hitler changed strategy to bomb London(stupid).  In combat the only good fighter aircraft is the one with the good wingman.  Fly alone, die alone.

If Relic ever fully abandons original CoH, how many of the Devolpment teams for all the mods would try to apply theirs to CoHO?  Is it even possible with their system of using real money to buy upgrades?  Seems like it would be another mountain of work.

Eastern Front / Re: Why did Germany lose on the Eastern Front
« on: January 09, 2011, 04:55:21 PM »
Previous poster had it right.
The basic facts are they were in a hopeless numbers game because of Hilter.  Their only hope would have been to maintain peace with one of the main allies.  If they had not attacked the Soviets, they could have concentrated on other fronts while keeping a keen watch on Stalin.  Stalin may even have aided them for a time, but he was just like Hitler, in that they could not help themselves when it came to critical thinking.  Decisions were made out of rage and paranoia, rather than logic presented by their generals.  Germany had one social advantage when facing the other allies, the allied leaders placed a higher value on having troops survive to fight again.  Hitler and Stalin could not have cared less about their people(IMO) it was all about their legacy.  The US economic ability made it inevitable that Germany would lose, because the axis did not have the capability to attack/harass it.  The endless supply of war materials would bury any enemy, no matter the quality of their people or weapons.  None of the main combatants were pushovers.

Was wondering who gets those crash reports?  You guys or Relic?
Is there any useful info in them for whoever gets them?  Just curious.
Been sending them when it happens, for what it's worth.
Thanks

The traps may not have been completed.  Then I think they can be run over.  Or if damaged during build, eng's dont finish them, but they look like they are finished, same result.

Relic must have considered these types of options.  They have the drop weapon(small arms) ability for their tiger ace campaign.  But they haven't really done anything for the last 2 years with entire game, so this may have been just a random idea they threw in.

General Discussion / Re: Eastern Front Download and Installation Guide
« on: December 18, 2010, 10:11:27 PM »
A question about installing the different versions.  Is there a any advantage to installing the steam version over the standard download off Moddb for example, or vise versa?  I am assuming many players have a preference for one or the other.  I have only downloaded from EF website or Moddb.

Bugs & Tech Support / Re: Solution to the problem: file "EF.API.Shell"
« on: December 17, 2010, 09:10:58 PM »
When you reinstall EF, is the setup supposed to automatically create a desk top icon for the launcher?  Mine did not, I went in and found the file for the launcher.  Then it(icon) was created during 1 of the updates.  During previous installs the desktop icon came up during initial installation.  Everything works good, just wondering if this is a change or maybe a bug?

Red Army Suggestions / Re: what i think about Soviets

Generaldeaths question is simply why? Is the handicap for Balance, historical accuracy, technical issue or some other reason?  It doesn't really matter or change anything for me personally, but many of us are curious to know details about some of the units in your game, makes it more fun IMO to find out some of this info.  The rants about features that an indivdual dislikes are uncalled for IMO, enjoy the product and appreciate the work of the developers.  Offering constructive ideas is expected, but they cant all be used.  If you are not having fun playing Coh, then you are most likely the problem(operator error) not the game.

I thank you Bloodspew for your post notes on getting the game re-installed.  I had the same problem with the characters not allowed, in my case it was the ":"  Once I removed it everything installed, but with no desktop icon.  I found the launcher file quickly in programs, THQ, Company of heroes.  Double clicked it, and it started the launcher, which proceeded to auto update.  Installed all the updates it found and the icon was created during one of the updates, now EF seems to be working.  Hope this small kernel of info will help others, like myself who know little about these maddening electronic wonders.
I didn't have to try some your other steps, thankfully

Balance Discussion / Re: Comparing T-34/85 with IS-2
« on: November 27, 2010, 06:46:50 PM »
IMO-The thing that gives the T-34 the edge is speed, a pack of 3 or 4 T-34's circle straffing the bigger tanks is lethal.
