Mapping / General Winter and Colonel Mud

You'all did a great job with the winterization project. Here is a complimentary concept that might work. Introduce mud into the mapping equation. I am thinking of something along the lines of how the frozen river on Zytomir map works. Slowed movement, penalties on cover and or combat. IIRC the old Smolensk Map, (Psel), had a rising water level in the pond containing the central VP now. This might be a false memory on my part but it would be cool if possible.

I don't know if any of this would work; but it would be a unique sort of feature for the Mod.

Here is a proposal for Soviet Propaganda Doctrine. It would replace or be a reward unit for OBR76 on RHS, 3 CP as now.

Ability: AIR SUPERIORITY: cost per use: 75 Mt. An Aeroflot of Grey Steppe Falcons overflies the map. It makes no attacks but takes a snapshot of the entire map. Anything that would be spotted when flare is activated will be shown. This could be shown on the tactical map and the main map simply by turning off fog of war. Duration 20 seconds.

If Flare is ever moved to Propaganda that would be gravy. Moving flare would fit in an Artillery Company Commander like Propaganda.

General Discussion / 1.7xx Breakthrough Discussion

The latest patch brings us another incarnation of The Soviet Armor Command Tree. The changes are refreshing.

  • Mechanics are greatly improved The production rules are fascinating. It makes Fast Light Tankovy a very solid option and gives us a chance to switch resources sround a bit. How do Mechanics get vet and what does it do?
  • Tank Riders has had a radical face lift. It would be nice if Mechanics riding tanks could repair while garrisoned and stationary. I do not understand why Guards may only opt for SMGs when this CT is chosen. Heavy Infantry with lots of Health should be able to choose SMGs regardless of Commander Tree chosen.
  • The choice of callins as Heavy turreted tank or Tank Destroyer is nice on both sides of the trees.
  • How does Inspired Speech work now? I'm certain there have been changes.
  • How does the air strike work now. I know there are changes here as well.
Besides the SMG change the only thing that needs improvement are the various descriptions for the CT.

Balance Discussion / The miraculous tranformation of the Zis3.

In a recent game my Zis 3 became decrewed. I recrewed it one or twice with Ingenery. It got a shot or two off at an HT and then I noticed some damage to squad. When I looked the ATG had transformed into a Zis2 ATG with room for a 4 man. It didn't have hull down ability, I never got around to upgrading to gunnery vets.

I suppose this is like the dropped shreks becoming Wehr shreks. Do I get all the other buffs of a Zis2? Is this a bug?

Strategy and Tactics / 1.7.02 Soviet Sharpshooters

What do You'all think of the new Soviet Sharpshooter Squad. How do you use them?

I have started to fool around with the new and improved? sharpshooter squads. I have no problems using them as FOs but am uncertain wether or not they actually shoot well. I have not seen anything that is particularly impressive in this regard either on my own hook or from the comp. Now that the AI actually lays mines I find using Sharpshooters as cappers results in dead sharpshooter squad every time.

Do you find they are working better as skirmishers or garrisoned in buildings or just as expensive artillery strikes. I will not pretend to have any large amount of experience with these squads at this time but at 220 mp Conscripts make much more sense. The new AI code is written to allow Sharpshooter SPAMs so I reckon there must be some value to these squads early game. They seem to have tactics coded to operate deep in  enemy territory in groups of two or three, but again They seem rather ineffective and are easily retreated or blown to smithereens with mines.

Balance Discussion / v1.7.02 Stormovy

I have been working thru the new maps, nice variety guys, thanks. I have noticed that Stormovie seem to be chewed to pieces by Volks w/ mp44s. I have have had two fire fights with vet 2 and no vet Stormovie where the Stormies lost 3-4 vet 2 and 2 no vet stormovie to 1 volks and ~50%health. in both cases Storms started in yellow cover and volks were quickly in yellow cover, other storms moved into yellow cover in support. Other skirmishes with vetted and nonvetted Stormovie have similar results even when volks are in red or No cover. Stormovie seem to work fine vs grens and Sturm truppen (with 2 or maybe 4 Assault rifles) but as I say the volks tear them up. ???

General Discussion / 1.7 Voice Overs

I would like to thank the crew who put together the recent Patch. Good Job Guys!

I have one major disappointment with this Patch: Changing the voice overs to Midwestern English from Russian is NFG. A lot of the flavor of the mod is immediately lost. I think it a great shame.

Bugs & Tech Support / 1.7.0 I have a little problem -issues List

I just installed 1.7 and started a game on Vyazma Map -as Soviets vs Wehr. A couple of minutes into the game, (maybe 5), I acquired a captured 88mm flak cannon at the central VP. I did nothing to do so and was playing the Soviets. The only thing I can think of is that there is campaign scenario contaminating the map for skirmishes. Surely something is amiss.

Edit: I loaded a game using PE/Wehr vs Sovs. No Flak 88 this time but the barrel of JadgPanther was missing from the model. Soviets are spamming Sharpshooter squads bigtime. Nice to see Soviet Sappers placing mines.

Edit: Loaded another game of Vyzama Played soviets and recieved a captured 88 at 2min 23 sec as above.

There are many Iconic Squads in the Soviet Faction of EF_mod. One of the most enduring is the Katyusha Rocket Launcher. I think it should be available every game. The Ostheer will have the Panzerwerfer42 available every game. The Katyusha could be changed out for the Soviet Fire base. The Firebase could even be used to replace the OBR_76.

One cannot but notice that when one captures a crew weapon and pans over it the weapon is now manned by the capturing Squad type. What are the best squads for capturing weapons to obtain the best weapons performance and survivabilty? How does vet effect the performance based upun Capturing Squad type? All crew weapons and factions are included.

General Discussion / Historical AI Commanders for SP campaign

When this mod gets  the Single Play Campaign mode on line it will be possible to use and select specific Commanders for use by the AI. Guderian, Manstein Zhukov Timoshenko ... even Vinegear Joe Stillwell could be programmed. The programming isn't hard. The hard part is in determining what aspects of a particular commanders military abilities or style should be included in the AI. That's where you come in. Select one or two (preferably one axis one Soviet), Commanders you would like to fight against in a campaign setting. include with your selection the characteristic You believe constitute that commanders game profile. These parameters include but are not limited to Aggressiveness, initiative, quartermaster skills, political skills, Operational Approach, etc. I will compile the information and work from there. From a practical approach the choices you will have for SP_Campaign mode will be Normal, Hard, Commander 1, Commander 2.

I am willing to bet CoH2 will not provide this sort of feature. ;)

Suggestions / Skin upgrades for infantry Squads

Here's an Idea that may be worth pursuing in the future.
Add several clothing upgrades to infantry units. Small Buff/nerfs could be applied to a given squad for being appropriately equipped for Summer/winter /Desert Jungle/
Camo etc. The upgrade would be available to all or select squads in every faction.  The Squad blueprint library would require updating, Skins would need to be available. The game engine is easily enough modified to accomodate this change and the upgrades could be incrementally updated the same way as maps are being winterized.
