It was controlled by command cables. You cut the cables you have a box filled with high explosives sitting pretty in the middle of a firefight.

At first it was radio controlled but when it drove out of range the radio man needed to get out of cover. Then Germans made a cheaper, more realiable solution with a cable.

About your radio control number:
German army had tried much more stuff ;)

E.g. they had tried to install video cameras and transfer this datas by radio at a control station.
They had tried to radio control Bogward Ladungsträger over a distance of 5.000m.
German army was very interested into radio controlled weapons.
May the force be with you.

Where i come from (Bayreuth; the wagner city you know) scientists were researching a bomb that exploded when reaching a special air pressure above ground.

Yeah isn't that just an airburst munition, like CW overwatch?

No. The bombs were dropped by planes and you could exactly set the altitude when it should explode. CW overwatch thingy is fired by a gun (i think)

The height at which the an airburst weapon is detonated will greatly influence its yield and destructive pattern. THe Little Boy "Uranium" type bomb was detonated IIRC 1900 ft. Later testing showed than was the optimal elevation for maximum destruction.

Similarly the high rate of fire for the MG42 was effective because it placed the greatest density of metal ("cone of penetration"), on the target in the shortest time. It seldom was fired at a greater rate than ~150 rpm or 5-7 rounds per burst.

Yes but same mechanism is it? Both detonate under a certain pressure? Or is the overwatch type airburst shell set on a timer?
