How do the support values in vCoH effect Combat?

When I see unit stats for CoH their are associated support range values. PE zeal improves PG performance when two or more Squads are in support range.

I think certain units benefit each other. For example I think Volks benefit from MG42 which is why they wotk well together(or vice-versa ). PG benefit each other when close with zeal. I think certain things "support" each other, thus a support value and range in which this value takes effcect. Hope I helped .
