bump...just want to make sure someone sees this, it would be a good fix in a future patch.

Another thing: the Partisans' booby trap ability seems to have disappeared.  It's still in the urban combat tech tree but when you unlock it, the icon to let them booby trap strategic points or buildings doesn't appear.  I looked at the changelog and didn't see anything about this.

General Discussion / Re: Thanks to the team for the brit reward

Yes thanks very much to the EF team for this new patch, I've only done one round with the Marines but I am liking the new units a lot.  I haven't tried using the recon jeeps much but I'm guessing they can spot snipers correct?  One thing I always hated about the vanilla Brits was that they couldn't spot snipers and the Wehrmacht AI would always exploit this and spam snipers, and the British units were so slow they couldn't rush a camo'd sniper easily, but the Marines are thankfully faster too.

Anyway are the British units available for play by people without Opposing Fronts?  I have OF but some of the people I play with don't.

Bugs & Tech Support / a couple of issues with the new Royal Marines units
« on: January 30, 2011, 11:43:44 PM »
I just installed this new update...THANK YOU yet again for all your hard work, I've only played one round with the new British units but I can see I'm going to have a lot of fun playing with them...

Here's a couple of issues I've noticed with the new units.

#1: with the SAS jeeps it seems like you can only repair them about 90% with the Sappers.  When I try to keep repairing them the Sappers do nothing.  Maybe each jeep has its own health and the sappers can only repair one jeep?  Not sure if this is intentional or not or if there's a way to get the sappers to repair them 100%, having expert repair sappers doesn't seem to do it.

#2: not really a bug, more of a skin issue, and I'm guess it's something you can't get around: the sappers have little chin straps coming down from their knit caps.  I guess it's left over from their old helmets.  It's nothing major but it looks kind of silly, if it can't be fixed then it's cool.

I'll post some more issues/bugs if I see them in case you guys didn't notice them.

Actually it seems like the Marines sappers can only repair one of the jeeps.  You can only put the repair icon over one of them, the other won't show the repair icon when you hover the mouse over it, and when you tell them to repair the other jeep, they will only repair that one and not move on to the other.  So basically it seems like one jeep can be repaired but the other can't.

Is this fixable?  I really really like these jeeps, especially the recoilless rifle one, but they get hurt pretty easily and if one of them gets a damaged engine and I can't repair it at all they become pretty useless.

Ok well that's good that they're intentional.

For the sniper ace, something like "camo must be off" would be better than "already in use."  For a firebase, "only one firebase can be built" or whatever would be better than "requires artillery firebase" which doesn't make any sense.

1) Sniper Ace's artillery strike does not seem to work--even when he has Veterancy 1, the artillery strike button is still grayed out and it says "this ability is currently in use" and it never becomes available.  The vet 2 attack works though.

2) Can't build more than one artillery firebase...maybe this is intentional, but when I try to build a second one, I get a message saying "requires artillery firebase" and it won't let me build it.

Other than that, pathfinding for infantry and tank units seems kind of buggy.  When I set a waypoint for tanks they will often go forwards then suddenly go backwards then go forwards again, also often they'll pick horrible paths like turning around with their rear to enemy AT guns when I told it to go straight forward.  Sometimes this sort of thing happens in the vanilla game but it seems worse in EF.  This happens with all factions.

Infantry sometimes will get stuck on certain paths and keep going forward and backwards especially if there are a few units trying to go across a narrow area, for example the right bridge in the middle of the Semois map.  This seems to only happen with Soviet units.

The pathfinding isn't gamebreaking but it can be annoying sometimes if my units are under attack.

Other than that, keep up the good work, 1.23 is definitely the best version of EF so far.  I've totally abandoned the Vanilla game and am having a lot of fun playing against the AI with all factions.

General Discussion / Re: Omg, the AI is great! :)

The AI in Eastern Front is tougher than the AI in the unmodded game.  I can beat beat Panzer Elite on Hard but Wehrmacht on Hard are too hard, they start pumping out too many Stugs and Pumas really early on.  The British are a good match though, they will actually fight back, in the unmodded game the British AI in a 1v1 game is really useless and doesn't do anything.

General Discussion / Re: Soviet Tanks Regarding Toughness

Apparently the IS-2 was more of an anti-infantry tank from what I have read on wikipedia and its gun wasn't really built for taking out big tanks, it was more for breaking through enemy defenses.  Not sure if that is how it is modeled in the game.

8
The description of it says that it does but I've never been sure since you don't get any kind of icon around the nearby soldiers.  Do they basically act like the Lieutenant units for the British, giving attack bonuses?

I don't think it was EF that was causing the connection errors.  I and my friend both have the Steam version of COH and we did a "verify local files" check and it said that a file was missing and had to be reinstalled, then after that we played several games with no disconnects.  I think it was either Steam messing up the game or xfire or possibly EF arranged some files badly.

Apparently they haven't had the chance to record all-new voices for the units so Relic gave the EF modders access to the voice files for the Russian version of COH.  You can tell because the light Russian tanks call themselves "Grrreyhound" and the T-34 is "Sherrrman" and the Guards are "Rrrangeri!"  So I guess the German voices are still set to react to American soldiers since they don't have new voices either.

11
Me and my friend tried a lot of different stuff and I think we figured it out...we both have the Steam version of the game and we did a "verify local files" thing and for both of us it said that a file was missing and had to be installed.  After that it worked fine again.  I think it might be because we were using xfire for voice chat and it does a lot of unnecessary stuff like integrating itself into games and trying to update them and I think it might have messed up some files, either that or Steam didn't install the game right.

So hopefully it was nothing to do with the EF mod.  Or maybe something about our internet connections cleared up overnight.

General Discussion / Re: Soviet Tanks Regarding Toughness

I find that the T-34 has really weak armor, it's ok to use against StuG's but I don't like to use it against more powerful armor because they get killed pretty quickly by AT fire.  The SU-85 goes down even easier.  The IS-2 is a lot better but it still seems to soak up damage pretty easily compared to other heavy tanks...I think what the topic creator is getting at is that Soviet tanks seem to take damage no matter what, whereas other tanks like StuG's and Panzers have a chance to deflect tank shells and take little damage, especially if hit in the front.  Soviet tanks don't seem to have that chance to deflect shells.

Overall the Soviet tanks seem to miss their shots more than other tanks too, too bad they can't get veterancy.  It would be kind of nice if there was a general tank upgrade for the Soviets that improved their gunnery and armor, instead you can only upgrade the T-34 and the SU-85.

In any case it's not a huge deal, the Russian tanks are generally cheap plus in late game you can use a lot of different stuff like AT guns and especially Guards, their AT grenades are awesome and really good for finishing off a damaged tank.

Someone on another forum suggested it might be an antivirus program causing the connections to get dropped, but we both turned our AV programs off and it didn't help.  It's pretty random, like we got through one game fine, then tried another and immediately got dropped, then did another and were fine until the VP counter got to around 25 and we were just about to win, and we dropped.  Annoying!   >:(

Yes I'm playing 1.04.

Hook up with a friend online and beat back that multi-approach demon!!

I would, and have been playing EF with a friend recently, but unfortunately now it seems like every game we play, after a while our connection drops...I get a message saying he dropped out and the AI took over, and he gets a message saying that I dropped and the AI took over for me.  We are still in the game, but it's like our connection to one another dropped.  Then we have tried playing the unmodded COH and we get the same thing after a certain while.  I asked about this on the bug report forum section but nobody has responded and I'm not sure if this is a game issue, a Relic issue, or a connection issue.  I'm not on a router and have a direct link to cable internet, and he's directly on an ethernet connection at his college.  Is anyone getting this issue?  It seems to happen when we do 2v2 against the AI.

Well for one thing I think people weren't expecting the non-Soviet AI to be changed, I read all the promos and release notes for the game and didn't see anything about it, so people used to the status quo are probably getting confused and frustrated.

And people play computer games so they can win, so it's kind of annoying maybe to have the challenge bar raised in what was already a pretty difficult and unpredictable AI (at least on expert).

The main problem I have with the vanilla AI is that on some maps the units seem to get confused and just sit around at the bottom of the map instead of going out to capture points or attack my units.  Lyon 1v1 is a good place to see this.  Maybe the new AI will reduce this though I see the AI sometimes do this on the new EF maps, like at the bottom of the Minsk map.

Anyway one good thing is that the Brit AI is actually competent now...in a 1v1 game in vanilla COH they just put out a few units and then let themselves get slaughtered, even on Expert.  On 2v2 or larger games they tend to be a bit more competent.  I just played a Wehr v Hard AI British 1v1 skirmish and it was quite tough.  Mainly it was just spamming me with infantry then later on tank units, but it was definitely tougher and more fun than the vanilla AI.
