General Discussion / Re: Civil wars....
« on: March 20, 2010, 02:57:39 AM »
i wasnt asking Relic :)

but the E.F. guys :D

all they have to do is add a tick box Allow/ Disallow Mirrors

DONE!
who wants to play mirrors....plays...who doesnt...doesnt!
BOTH sides win ! NONE loses !

so...whats the harm !?
and no..i do NOT think it would be hard to add!
all it needs be done, is change the code that lets user select sides on the starting screeen, to allow for mirror matches, if the tick box is checked ,,yes''

regarding medic v medic issue.....you re fighting a warr with medics ?!
when you hear the attack warning...dont you normally zoom there and check things out ?!

and then decide what forces to send ?!
if you allow your medics to fight war for you other than them beeing attacked and normal defending.....just quit E.F. now and save yourself the embarassment

i see peeps bringing in the balance factor

yes, i m roughly a begginer.....but please do enlighten me - what EXACTLY is the balance issue in mirror matches ?!?!

in normal games, where a different civ faces another different one,  THERE are REAl balance issues!

else, all those patches are just  devs wating time ?!?   (retorical...ofc devs didnt waste time! was making a point)

in standard games, there ARE real problems (i.e. soviets at start in 1.01 patch now solved mostly)

but what issues in mirror games ?!?!
BOTH civs would have same weaknesses and strenghts!

it would ONLY come down to whoever has best military thinking,  be it teritory dominance, teching etc

i wouldnt be just techning, cause it useless o be top tech, and as a draw-back have only a handfull of units and thus, bearly any teritory , and thus, live inconstant fear  fear of beeing overrun by a vastly superior (tho quality inferior) enemy

so the point of ,,it would be dum|! jus ta tech race'' its moot
and i reckon that if me, as a begginer sees this, so do others

i think the REAL reason is somewhat more mundane ... HIPROCRISY

why ?   because in mirror matches, it would hurt even more to lose!
in different civs matching, one may (allbeit with low odds of success) conjure up the imbalance argument....

but there is no such argument in mirror matches!
thus, your own incompetence becomes 1000x more obvious!

thats why people hate the idea of mirror matches!

concrete example ---- someone who play russians alot, learn them very well, think they ve mastered it....then suddenly, face another human who prolly played another civ a long time, but that guy beats the living hell out of them ROFL

now hats gonna hurt the feelings of that guy who played russians a long time....

rationally ,that would be the only real reason to be against mirror matches .... there is no other objective one

hello again

beeing playing abit more at grandpa, now that spring cleaning is done :P

yes, i can attest better now !

doing games vs soviets (especially them...), or even vs opthers, i must confess it seems kinda stupid

personally, i dont mind THAT much  ( tho i do mind it abit....especially when i just want a nice, boringly easy EF game..>)
reson i dont take it all that personally is cause it promotes aggresive playing....

and since i just loooove the german war machine....fits perfectly :D   sieg heil ftw :P

but beeing objective here ....
i m not that far off a begginer myself

and i think alot of new people who may love the gameplay, graphic engine etc, will NOT have the zen patience to get A.S.S. R.A.P.E.D. on easy level 100000 times, before they finally come up with a coherent tactics to turn the odds

and they will give up, which will have the nasty detrimental effect of deterring new people and keepin the playing population low
and no, telling them ,,get a friend and play online'' isnt the answer

the other horrible effect is the encouraging of cheats, especially if the match is  human + pc   v  human + pc   (seen it happen )

an even worse effect, is that those fgrustrated begginers who get R.A.P.E.D. on Easy level, will tell others who might want to give this great game a shot, to just give up, as its too frustrating when learning

and they are RIGHT !!!
begginer levels (aka Normal, but mostly Easy ) are akin to a school !
you should play on easy, beat the crap out of the PC, learn what and when to do, then move on to more difficult levels and eventually human opponents, who are obviously, much harder than any A.I. can be

here is where E.F. seems to fail big!
by creating a much too steep learning curve, it effectively shuns off new people ...

no one minds taking a few beatings at first of course, but getting effectively dissemboweled like a pig, 1000 times + by any civ, in Easy, isnt the way to attract new peeps

the Easy level should be like a test crash dummy !
very low opposition, OR if the A.I. makes many units, they should act stupid allmost always, to allow the novice to get the feel of the game

some will say : idiot! do tutorial!
i think we can all agree, a tiny limited tutorial is nothing like real warfare

i believe despite their superb job creating E.F., their devs do NOT have the right to decide to up the difficulty 2 times over --- effectively raising all levels one tier + insane resource boost

once again...i do NOT mind it  (that much...) as germans are aggresive and deadly strikers :D :D

but 8 of 10 newbies WILL mind it!
that is the reason why the original A.I. from Relic on Easy, was ....well.....easy :P

E.F. devs shouldnt assume all should be as pros as they are!
they have no such right !
imagine if at school, in frist grade, the teacher would skip begginer writing and calculus, and go all the way to advanced mathematics :P

dunno about you...but to any normal first grader, that would be one helluva shock !
and most normal parents would just withdraw their child from one such school !
even if that school provides a free iMac etc etc !

IMO, devs should alter ONLY  the Hard version !
after all....dont such pros play Hard versions only ?!

i have an idea for 1.05 :))

would it be possible  (if only in single player skirmish games.....if not also multiplayer), to have civilian wars?

aka USA v USA etc...basicly any country vs any country :))
could add a tick box Allow/ Disallow Civil Wars :)

just thinking :p
ye ye i know historicaly isnt accurate...but thisi s a GAME :)
not a simulator per se :D

just ponder on it .....

Balance Discussion / stealth changes ?!?
« on: March 17, 2010, 08:59:43 PM »
hello all

after playing a few days (since my net fell :P) on original, i believe the A.I. is changed compare to the original !?

i love E.F. ....variaty is the spice of life
but is it me....or the A.i. is changed in E.F> ?!

didnt saw any patch notes saying that .....
i m asking, cause some of my tacs on the orignal, dont work in EF

also, upon viweing records of games in EF, i m noticing the A.I. on any level ( i play on Normal and Easy for fun, where i play,l i dont have internet ), gaining resources at a freightning pace!

in fact, viewing a recorded game, in 200 secs timed, the enemy, Panzer Elite, had 4 high tier tanks + a good number of medium vehicles, despite the fact they controlled roughly 1/3 of map !

did the A.I. also gained a huge boost to resource income !? ... like 100% or something ?!
 i m playing 1.04

just asking, would lik to know if its me seeing things, or it really is like this... :D

ok...how about this ?

lets suppose E.F. devs make this possible  WITH  the unique exception of men hiding in buildings  (when men garrison in buildings )

and even then.... no more full colored contour....JUST colored outline of their body !
(check Age of Empires 2 to see how a person moving behind a building, has a colored body contour...thisi s much more subtle)

and as far as vehicles are concerned..... cmoon !
if a a Tiger, sherman etc are behind trees...you will see them :D
even if they try to take cover behind a building.....in no way can a building obscure even a small vehicle, that good as to make it totally invisible !

doubt the A.I. would have that much great advantage

as a compensation, if needed, code the A.I. so if it passes past an enemy unit taking cover behind something LARGE, it has 80% chance of ignoring it and keeps on moving :D

regarding the chance to the original C.O.H... cmooon :)))
 this is  M O D D I N G :D ...
its MEANT to change the original :))

they changed the original in a much deeper way anyway, than mear graphics !!!  REMEBER ?
they changed the very A.I., didnt they ?
was there a problem with that ?! Hell NO !
( NOTE: maybe some balancing issues, but they are beeing resolved)

changing a small number of pixels is ALOT less than changing the very core of the game, the A.I. :D
if they pulled that one off....i d imagine doing this, wouldnt take them more than a coffee break and 3 key-strokes :))

it would make the gameplay (or watching reruns ) much more enjoyable :)

the ONLY forseeble problem is in human vs human matches....as some might speculate taller buildings to hide behind !
BUt GUYS! during the real WW2, knowing when to hide, when to move, when to attack is what made the difference between military geniuses aka Rommel, Michael Wittman etc and the regular grunt .....right ?
would it be so bad to reward a guy is he is very good at utilizing terrain, buildings etc to hiw own advantage ?!
i d say it opens up possibalities :D

Suggestions / Shade see-through contour ...
« on: February 26, 2010, 04:08:35 AM »
hello

i will be brief...

when i get back from work, i love to un-wind with either abit of skirmish with AI or with my pal...

i can allmost smell the gunpowder and feel the hot, contorted metal from a shell :D :D

this mod, E.F., ROCKS !

i have a question to devs though ...
you know that wehen playing, if any unit goes behind a tree or house, you see a colored shadow-see-through of it...

dunno about others, but i m terribly annoyed at it :((
it wrecks immersion to see that fugly thing :( and i dont think i m alone on this

was wondering...
is it possible to code that see-shadow out of the game ?  so that if a unit is behind a tree, it looks as in real life, aka beeing obscured by the obstacle in front of it, AS NORMAL and NOT with the stupid colored contour ?

OR.....give it a switch on/ off at the start of the game or in graphics option  (would also improve performance on less powerfull machines, as the pc wouldnt have to calculate as many polygons)

OR....at the very least, when i watch a replay ? :)

i know what some will argue...how will you see your unit if its behind a house ?!
to that i respond:
 1) stop beeing n00b-ish and forget your own units....keep tabs at all times!
i just got started and so far, i never forgot a unit, even small squadrons ... the mini-map is A+, more than enough to keep tabs

 2) if you forget where a unit is...you deserve to lose! no real army commander would forget his troops placement :))  hehe

so...is it possible?  as an option at least? :D

thanks
