Ostheer Suggestions / Re: Foreign Support Units.
« on: August 17, 2010, 12:57:18 PM »
Finnish commandos would be great. Give 'em Soumi SMGs, Panzerfausts, camo ability and integrate a marksman in the squad.  ;D
Not to mention a crowbar that can be used to immobilize Russian tanks! Finnish bear strenght! (I'm not finn, btw, but we scandinavians have to hear alot about how insanely badass our eastern neighbours are - after all they are our wall towards Russia)

j/k

Possibly OP, lol... But something would be needed to distinguish them from Wehr Stormtroopers. Smaller squad (three men) with camo and SMGs but also a marksman ability similar to that of the British recon section?

Would sure add some flavour to the Ostheer in a way that a generic German "stormtrooper" squad would not be ble to do.

Eastern Front / Re: Best Machine-GUn of WW2? (As a GPMG)
« on: August 08, 2010, 10:20:05 PM »
Dont overheat like youre MG would.  ;D
M2 Browning can easily overheat, and it's not as easy to change the overheated barell as on the MG42.

In any case - the poll was about which was the best GPMG. And in that case, he MG42 is easily the best one, together with the MG34. A very flexible weapon thhat can easily be carried by a single man and used in all kinds of combat situation.

The M2 Browning is a very good weapon, dont get me wrong, but much more "specialized" for certain tasks and therefore not as good as a GPMG as the MG42.

Tech Support / How do I update through the launcher?
« on: February 03, 2010, 10:51:53 AM »
Hi. I read that the latest patches are supposed to be installed through the EF-launcher. Problem is that it just won't work for me...

I press the "Check for updates"-icon, and after a couble of seconds a changelog (for 1.02 in this case) appears. After that nothing happens, and I can't get rid of this changelog (which is blocking the whole screen so I can't see anything else on my desktop) in any way except terminating the launcher-process through the taskmanager.

What am I supposed to do?

What about giving them the camoflauge ability? So that they become more of an ambush- or "hit and run"-unit.

They should release it as a torrent. Best alternative when so many are downloading.

Eastern Front / Re: Thank you USSR (A little about history)
« on: January 18, 2010, 03:29:35 PM »
Just look at what Spanishfly said. If Hitler was voted the 3rd most admired person in German history there would be outrage, especially in Russia. But Stalin, who arguable caused the deaths of more people than Hitler is seen as a Hero of some kind, and he wasn't, just a murderous tyrant. His generals won him the war, but he took the credit.

The main difference between them is that Stalin was smart and knew how to make friends. While Hitler went for the "badass massmurderer" image with skulls, death and black uniforms, Stalin was sweetmouthing about solidarity and socialism.

Both were fascists, both were killers, both were bad. But one of them realized that it ain't smart to walk around and talk about how "bad" he is and played it nice instead. That's why Stalin not only killed more people than Hitler, but also got the support from most of the world while doing it!

At the same time, I understand why the Russians admire him. If I was Russian I would place him at the top spot. He killed alot of his own people, sure, but to be honest; would the USSR have been able to stop the Nazi onslaught without a leader like him? He had that "strong fist" that was necessary to unite the Russians against this the greatest threat they had ever faced (saying alot, considering that they suffered under both the Mongols and Napoleon)... He was a necessary evil.

Onto the topic... Yes, when you start to really read about WW2 you realize pretty fast that the most important part of the war was "Hitler vs. Stalin". More people fought and died on the Eastern Front than on all other fronts combined. IIRC, the top 5 bloodiest battles in human history were all fought on the Russian front of WW2. Stalingrad, Leningrad, Kursk and Berlin are just some of the more famous battles, but there are numerous others that we barely know anything about in the west, but make the most ferocious fighting in Western Europe look like afternoon tea.

It was the culmination of a conflict that had defined post-WW1 Europe; that between fascism and communism. The nazis dubbed it a "War of Extermination" - which is a nice way of summing it up.

In the end, it meant the end of traditional European militarism.

This is, imo, a very good documentary about the war in the East; "The War of the Century"

Love what I see! Look like a really well-balanced and adaptive fighting force, not as "limited" to a certain strategy like the Brits and PE. Really like your approach of the game sort of representing and summing up the "Great Patriotic war"; starting of with limited supplies and being unprepared but slowly getting the advantage and, if you play it right, steamrolling the opposition with huge assault forces!

Like to see that the player who won did so because he was the better one (what was the German player doing, sending his KT up like that into enemy territory without support?), not because he had an unfair advantage by playing the better team. Wehr and Red Army look really balanced!

I see why you want the Chetniks... A way to counter the Soviet partisans, yes? But it just doesn't make sense - at all. They hated the Germans and fought against them (although the helped them in a couple of anti-communist operations - the Yugo part of WW2 is a frikkin' mess). Is it even necessary for the Ostheer to have a partisan-style unit just to balance them to the Soviets?

Croats would make more sense, as some have already mentioned. Alot of them participated in the war against the Soviet army - some even fought at Stalingrad. I'm not sure about how you could make them unique, though.

Btw, to everyone pointing out how this is the "GERMAN Ostheer" and how the Axis allies aren't worth mentioning; non-german units would add alot of colour and flavour to this faction. And we already have two "pure" German factions... Besides, it's not like some Finnish elite soldiers or one or two non-German tanks would steal the whole show, the majority of units will still be Germans.

The German allies in the east deserves some kind of mention. The best way, in my opinion, would be to represent them through call-in units.

I read suggestion where the Ostheers doctrines could be the three Army Groups (North, South and Centre). Finnish troops (imo they should be similar to Wehr Stormtroopers, with cloaking ability, SMGs and Panzerfausts) could be a call-in unit for the Armygroup North.
South gets the Romanians and Centre... Well, I don't know about Centre. Maybe some anti-communist Cossack volunteers?
