Possible solution to summer uniforms and skins in winter maps
« on: January 16, 2011, 06:30:47 PM »
I was thinking, what if you could change the skins of the units your using by choosing a different unit in the rewards panel, exactly the same unit and stats and weapons but a different skin.

im sure devs could alter interface so that u can select a 'winter army' or a 'summer army'.

possible?
ps, dont know whether someone has already come up with this so dont hate me if they have

Or maybe you could tie it to the map effects? So if there are snow effects, the game will pick snow clothing, if not it will be standard clothing? Although these changes would only really be relevent to the Soviet Union and Ostheer, since the others aren't really supposed to be there anyway...

yeah but i heard that they can't make the clothes change when the map changes, i think it would have to be done manually

Well that sucks, since there's no way (that i am aware of) to make the A.I. use reward units...

Yeah i looked at the 'Who Dares Wins' page and found this

'All Changes to the Commonwealth faction are togglable through a single optional Reward "unit".'

the 'Marine Commando's' is a REWARD faction, if the devs did the same with each faction and just changed the skin.
you could have a winter army and summer army, using the same technique.
It would be crude but it could work

I thought i read somewhere that Eastern Front isn't going to change the relic armies?

And i still don't know of anyway to make the A.I. players use reward units...

First: it wouldn't work, since, as pariah has noticed above, AI doesn't use reward units (so far).
Second: it would be a pure waste - instead of the possibility to have some actually different (reward) units, all you would have is just a different skinspack, which are scattered throughout the web in piles.
Finally: it would be really great, if you simply got yourself some winter skinpack and used it for your own pleasure, for it would definitely make this somewhat strange topic obsolete. ;)
No offence, please.

I appreciate your points  but most people who play mods casually like myself haven't the faintest idea how to apply different skin packs and such like.
I realise it might be easy for you and all the other clued up people out there but if the mod wants to increase its downloads it needs to provide for people who haven't a clue.
This is why the more popular mods like EF and BK have installers, its more accesible to more people.
On the subject of different reward units, why not do what BK have done and add lots of new units to faction pools(I realise that they have now implemented limited reward units).
While i realise this isn't really how reward units are meant to be used you don't have to build them.

And yes my idea wouldn't work unless devs could find a way for AI to use reward units.

Why would we want dozens of units that essentially do the same thing? BK isn't very fun in my opinion, simply because most of the stuff in it is pointless. This mod keeps the gameplay of vCoH with limited unit choices but variety in the way you can use those units.

If you want to install skinpacks I'm sure there's tutorials floating around somewhere. Just google search "installing CoH skinpacks" and you'll find something. It's as easy as copy and paste.
If you get into an argument with me, you're wrong.

Honestly, I don't think this would be implemented.

Why don't devs just create a new faction called Winter Soviets and rename the first Summer Soviets ? Just copy the old faction and replace the skins, but it's just my opinion ...

These would be followed by "sad soviets" (around 1941), "concerned soviets" (that would be 1942-43), "merry soviets" (1944), and "joyful soviets" (may 9th 1945).

Why not just make a skinpack? Regular and Winter Soviet skins.
