Remote Hetzer MG
« on: July 19, 2011, 06:37:40 PM »
Has anybody noticed that Hetzers used an MG that isn't manned by anybody? Did the Germans really figure out how to make remote control weapons by 1944? I can't see how a weapon like that can work without technology from the past two decades.

THe 38T series had ball mounted MGs. It is unlikely that the co-axial mount was locked into the main gun, but maybe. The Drivers MG could be fired "remotely" -while driving, low accuracy that way.

It was able to be used by the commander with the help of a periscope and an extended trigger. So it wasn't remote controlled but operated from the safe inside.

What was the ammo capacity and rate of fire? And was this system used on any tanks other than the Hetzer?

Also, why don't people use these in modern times? It's obviously much safer than sticking your head out...

I saw that StuG III, StuG IV and Jagdpanzer IV had also "remote MG". In game it works "perfect". In real life... I think that it's only scared infantry for that they didn't come closer to tank. And MG looks like it could not be lifted up and down, so perhaps this accuracy was very low. I'm not an expert, so i could be wrong in this thing.

They using it. For example tank Abrams, Merkava.

It would be an mg34 firing the 7.92 round. With about 800-900 rounds per minute?
However I have read that those were loaded with ammo drums with 50 rounds. However it did exist ammo drums with 75 rounds that were modifyed.

And I Think this werent so effective. You had hard time aiming with them . You only had a little periscope :3

In C.O.H. the periscope only offers a sight and range increase; The M.G. still operates without it. Wouldn't it make more sense then if the upgrade activated the secondary gun?

Hetzer carried 1200 rounds for secondary armament. Didn't the MG34 use cloth ammo belts for AFV use?
